OK Gal I'll do my best . First of all I have a time ranger & like it . I'm not real knowledgeable about different brands of detectors other than what I've read . I seem to be getting as good of performance as most posters except for the high dollar machines . I'd say it's probably as good as other detectors in its price range & has a lot more features than most detectors in that price range . A lot of people seem to be down on bounty hunters so don't be surprised if someone tells you they aren't any good . The latest version has the P4 mode , uses two 9 volt batteries & has a + & - in the lower right hand corner of the screen . The older versions had an external antenna , used C batteries , didn't have the P 4 mode & said blanker in the lower right hand corner of the screen with a
2 , 0 , 4 displayed there . I'm pretty sure this is correct & hope it helps . To the best of my knowledge there is not a radio shack twin .

Im a newbie too, and just got my time ranger 3 days ago...

first off, you should be able to get a brand new unit for $379.99 from kellyco and this unit should be the latest version { I dont think kellyco is selling the older modesl; that took C batteries }

The Time Ranger has LOT of features , and for a newbie, its gonna take a while to undrstand all the terminology and put it into use. I have read the manual about 6 times now and I feel I fully understand everything. Today I took the unit out and tested it on my back yard with a penny, nickel, dime, quaretr, silvr dollar and a gold chain .......

The detcetor did afantastic job of Indenitfiying each item.....but I will say the gold chain seemed to be the tougest thing for the detctor to idnetify...it was jumping around from the foil I.D to the Iron I.D.........

The pinpoint mode on the TR is fanmtasitci and I dotn think a seperate pinpointing machine is needed....

You oculd get a simplier unit that costs less. but you may outgrow it quicjklly and then be sorry...

the Time Ranger has a steeper learning curve and alot of features, but that may mean it will last you for years down the road or be all you ever need to find things with...

I apologize for my typing skilss...I hate typing...:}

The instruction manula for the Time Range is also quite good....

but I found 2 things that the manual does not expalin to well...

1st is the LCD readout for the " ground setting" the manual doesnt say if this should be reading at ZERO or if it should be reading 1 2 3 to the left or 1 2 3 to the right...I cal;led first texas to ask them and they told me the needle sahould be to the left and register at 2 or 3 ....then I called Kellyco and they told me the neddl;e should be in the cneter and reading 0 ...

so I got two differtna snwers and I satill dont know which is the right ansmwer......

the 2nd thing is the manual gives a chart that shows possible numrical readings of certain metallic items....it breaks donw the number from 1 - 165 .....but the numric readings on the Time ranger start at 1 and go up to 299.......so we dont know what the readings from 166- 299 really indicate...

I am no newbie to detecting LOL .I have been at it for over a year now.The Time Ranger sounds like a great machine ,my friend will probaly like it.She is a fast learner and will pick up on its usage quickly i am sure.
