A guy showed me a piece he found, I didn’t take a pic but my first reaction was a hoe, then he pointed out the bevels and said he thought it could be a knife. I was curious are hoes beveled? I just don’t see the knife but I’ve never seen a flaked stone hoe in person so I don’t have much of a feel for that kind of stuff

What is the dimensions of this item you are speaking about? What color is this item?

What area of this item has the bevel?

Most, but not all hoes where made of mill creek chert.

Here is a photo of one of the hoes in my collection; 5 1/2 inch length, note the notching style

If the bit area has been well used, use polish will be evident and sometime indications from plant material as the relic is used often.

Here is another image of a hoe in my collection which has a lot of use wear and grooves from plant material. This hoe has heavy use wear and patina. From St Clair county illinois

It was a similar stone maybe more white. 5-6 inches, the bevels are down each side. Sorry about the lack of pics. Maybe it’s just me but seems a bit weird to snap pics of something someone wants to show you. I know my little drawing isn’t a lot to go on, but the one is a cross section. Just curious about chipped stone hoes.

many points start with the stem (base) and then progress to the distal end (tip). Your buddy may have found one in the starting phase that was never completed. This one albeit broken exibits this IMO.
happy trails

At 4 or 5 inches in length, it sounds like an archaic bevel relic to me not a notched hoe.

Hard to say what type without actual photos.

Many archaic relics had beveled edges. This would give the relic a rhomboid cross section when looking at it from the front.

Interesting maybe he was right about the knife idea, or at least not a hoe. I’ll have to see if I can get a pic sometime. It may be a while since he’s older and im trying to limit contact with anyone as much as possible.
