I saw this at the HomeDepot.....had to buy it...
Has to be the easiest and fastest way to dig a plug. Tried the handheld version....too flimsy...this thing is STRONG!

Couple of tips though....

* Where the foot pegs mount to the shaft, weld a small triangulated piece of metal at the top AND bottom (gusset), this will prevent the pegs from tearing away from the body after repeated uses.

* Also on the pegs, would be a good idea to add some traction tape...slipping off this thing REALLY REALLY hurts....TRUST ME.

Hope this helps ...

But what do they call it?

It looks like it could be a bulb planter that might be found in the lawn and garden department. I'd hate to go into the store asking for a pogo stick without the springs!
Can you help us out?
Steve

I hate to be the one to burst anyones bubble, but if your caught is some parks with the Bulb digger you could be fined. This causes the grass roots to be cut all the way around and during the summer the grass in the circle dies. I've seen yellow spots all over one section of a park and was told that the metal detectorist was fined and banned from the park. A police report was filed yet. I should think a warning would have been enough, but no, they went the whole ten yards. Seems he was warned before........... Just be careful where you use it. I use a spade in the woods myself, but not in a park.

Although ther is no ban on digging plugs in the local parks, I was approached by a local groundskeeper who was angry because they were sodding a portion of the park. I showed her how I dig a plug and seal it back up and convinced her it would actually aerate the soil and she was very happy. She thought I was just going to dig holes and leave them as some detectorists do unfortunately. Now every time she sees me she comes over to visit and always waves if she is busy. Monty

So what is the best way to dig a plug without killing the grass?

There is a post here on the forum somewhere with photos and all. Marc or Jeff, can you lend a hand? Monty

A bulb digger will not kill the grass unless it is very dry and then any kind of digging will kill it as it is already stressed. Grass roots grow strait down not out in a circle. I will agree if you have a large digger with you in a park you are going to draw a lot of attention but as far as hurting the grass It will not hurt it any more than any other digging device except maybe a probe. Cool digger but I would not carry it to the park either.
