I just got back into MDing after a 3 year absence :-[

I have never really hunting at or in the water, except the rare occassion in the dry sand. I'm looking for a water detector, but seems like everyone i check out has a flow in one area or another.

Is there such a thing as a great all around water detector.

great in the water, out of the water, on the dry beach, in the wet salt, fresh etc.

I want to get into diving eventually, but most of the use will be wading in both fresh and salt water beaches.

Seems like the main thing I hear, is a detector is great in the water and not so much out, or vice versa. had 3 White's detectors and probably can't go wrong with them, but feedback on overall use would be great.

BOUNTY HUNTER!!!!

if u are not going to go diving and just work say knee deep water, damp sand, and the dry stuff

go with minelab elite or GT

but if u plan on taking it under or out deeper go with the minelab - EXCALIBUR

dry sand....................like dekalb33 - bounty hunter or anything will work up there
garrett ace 250 is nice, so i hear, all the tesoros and i hear this newer model by bounty hunter parent company.............Tech........something....... is really hot in the dry sand.

the plus with the minelabs are the tones...............it gives u a reference point to listen tooooo................after awhile u will be able to tell a penny then quarters, dimes or silver ring and then............ gold, nickels, alum pieces, pull tabs, thin copper sound great and well as lead sinkers.................they all null out over iron, but if it is like round like steel key ring or cheapie earring............many many times it will bleep or cherp and let u know it is something, but like of times in bleeps and cherps first then nulls so u will know

minelabs are very hard to beat in the beach enviroment.

my two cents

The best in my opinion has to be the Excalibur, been using one for nearly ten years and still cant beat it. Read all the detector reviews and see what 90% of the experienced water detectorist are using and you will be convinced. seeya Neilo ;D

There is only one that stands out from the rest and that is a Minelab Excalibur 1000. I have used most of the water units and they all are good, but the Excal excels at everything but nugget hunting and relic as it has a Iron mask. It's deep and needs no ground balance and can be used anywhere in the world. I've taken mind diving as deep as hundred foot and have never had to send it in since I had it about six years. It has paid for itself a few times over.

I have to concur with my fellow detectorists. For ease of use, both in the water and out, the Excalibur would have to be my first choice. That, along with the fact that it seems to pick up extremely small targets with ease makes this one of, if not the best detector on the market.

thanks everyone on taking the time to post. It looked to be an easy choice after reading your posts and seeing it was pretty one sided on the choice for excalibur.

I looked at the previous review on this site and looked at some other MD review sites and now I'm even more confused. Seemed to be alot of unhappy people with the excalibur and it seems just on the research i have done to be the most defective brand or in need of repair alot.

I was down to White's beachhunter and tesoro tiger shark, but now included the excalibur, HH pulse, and cz20......

Oh my...after another day of research, i should have another 10 to add to the list ::)

I know reviews are hard and opinions vary on everything, so I will just have to make a decision. I am a white's loyal detector and never had any problems with any white's detector, but just not sure if their water MDers are good all around machines...I just don't want to have 5 different machines for different things.

To me the best 2 machines are the Fisher CZ-20 and the Minelab Excalibur. The Minelab has a few more features, tones, but is a little more fragile.
The CZ is a bullet proof work horse with only 3 tones.Easy to understand.
All other water machines pale in comparison unless you go with a pulse unit. Then plan to dig everything!

The minelab Excaliber 1000 is buy far one of the best machines you could buy. I have one and the other machine I use is a fisher impulse and i really love both machines. But they are a lot different from each other. the excaliber has an iron mask and that means a lot if you are tired of diging junk and you only want to dig the good stuff. If you get in an area that has a lot of nails and iron like bobby pins you will be glad you went with the excaliber. ::)

I will ask again.
I have read most Pros and Cons concerning Deep Seeking MD,s.
I am involved in a project and have been for over 40 years. I and seeking the exact locations of a number of gold bars that were dumped into the mud and know for a fact the mud and water is 12' thick then you hit hardpan. The only metal is Gold and nothing else-not even a beer can :o(believe it or not). I have taken core samples all the way to hardpan and had it tested.
If you were to leave a shovel in this mess it will dissolve within 6 weeks and a beer can will maybe last 10 weeks.
NOW does anyone have any idea what type of device needed to pinpoint this Gold?
Thanks
Peg-Leg

Thanks Everyone... I guess it will be the Xcal to work side by side with my Impulse!
???Should you get the extra battery pack and is it easy to change in the field??

BOUNTY HUNTER!!!!

Im not laughing with you, "I'm laughing AT YOU".
I will NEVER pay $1000+ for a METAL DETECTOR.
Those of you that do, more power to you.

Trust me I would pay that much if I didn't have so many hobbies.
If I had more money I would by one of each.

Don't get me wrong, I'm broke, live in the city, have a girlfriend, so most of my money is spent, and have like 5 other fully obsessive hobbies, plus I go out 4-5 times a week.

So I am in no position of spending so much in a detector, nor do I have to.

Last I check Fisher made some Great UnderWater Detectors and they we're Reasonably Priced.
I guess if not the best, one of the best deals on an Underwater Metal Detector is FISHER.

Last I checked FISHER was BOUGHT BY BOUNTY HUNTER.
So the making of PI detectors and Underwater detectors is not far away.

So your little cute remark, turned out to be SMART after all.
No body expected that, just like no one expected BOUNTY HUNTER to buy off one of the Oldest Metal Detecting companies.

Keep a hold to your detectors, because they risk being bought off in the Near future by the leading companies.
Bounty Hunter and Garrett.

No pun intended. I didn't state much opinions, just said how I felt.
Peace

Leo,
You sound young and have many things going now, I was the same way 20 years ago. Lot of us old farts are down to our last girlfriend (Our Detectors) and don't mind spending a little of our late in life stash for her and on her! ;D

(Wait , I am not that old!!) ::)

Excalibur, Excalibur, and if you can't find one of those, get an Excalibur. The extra money you spend will make up for it in reliability, ruggedness, depth, and accuracy.

I have had my original Excalibur since 1998. Other than tune ups, it has never faltered, leaked, or gone tits up on me underwater or on dry land.

Minelab has really spoiled me. I have never had a problem with any of the three Minelabs I currently own, and the Excalibur paid for itself after two years when it gave me an 18K Rolex Daytona Yachtmaster in 7 feet of water, under about 10" of sand.

Good Luck-Mike
