So Bezjo and I set out today to find me the gold coin i've had my eye set on all season. And while I yet again did not reach that goal, today had to have been my best day detecting thus far this year. We started off by going to a local park that dates back to the 19teens. We like this park because a lot of the college girls go there to sunbathe and, well, lose their jewelery. And always hope to grab some silver or that elusive gold currency. Today, I snagged a 1943 walker half, a 1942 merc, and a beautiful gold amethyst wrapped in 10k. Not too bad.....then this HUGE African American man who works for the parks service who was mowing rode up to us and told us that we couldn't be there. Now I've been told by the city that detecting there is fine, other parks workers say its fine, but who am I to argue with the guy from The Green Mile. So we left, grabbed some lunch, and debated on where to go next. Now if any of you have met John and I....we can never agree on where to go, if we can even make a decision. Well my guy feeling for the day was the park, and I scored good for an hour hunt. His gut feeling was the homesite at the boyscout camp. So I told him, hey lets go there and hit it up, but he wasn't feeling it at first. But then I mentioned one of the other homesites on the property that neither of us have really checked out. So it was decided that the virgin site would be it. 40 min drive later we arrive and begin to search. We haven't even checked out the cellar holes before so it was difficult at first to figure out what went where back in the day. After we orient ourselves we decided the larger of the foundations looked more promising and had less downed trees around it so it would be our focus. Typical farm land, lots of iron, lots of nails and spikes. Also lots of SILVER! I pulled a 1897 barber dime, 1876 seated dime, a 1854 seated half-dime, 1888 V-nickel, 1915 buffalo, and a 1941 Jefferson nickel. Also I snagged what I think is a silver thimble, says 860 on the side I believe. Bezjo pulled, if I remember correct, an 1834 bust dime, a wheatie (no clue on date), and an 1891 V-nickel. By the way... that is his first silver coin....an 1834 dime....yea lucky...but i'm sure he will post his finds later after he gets home. I am also posting a few pictures of the site if anyone is interested in what it looks like, most of the coins were found within the foundation with only a few outside.
