best coil brand

Actually the most popular coil is the one that comes with your detector! In the case of Garrett and BH I know they tune the machine to the coil they send out with it. I personally believe those after-market coils are either gimmics or for special applications rather than your day to day detecting. JIM

yah, i understand that but i can only imagine the damage that could be done with an 18 inch excelerator coil on a top of the line detector.

I have a 15' Double D "Coiltec" Coil on My Sovereign.

I can find Tiny Objects in Trashy Areas With It.

The "Sun-Ray" Coils are Suppose to Be Good But Never Used them.

I have a Small "Excellerator" for my Sovereign It's Not Double D . It's Concentric,
Which I'm not Real Used to, But it Does its Job.

Before You ask the Difference, Double D Coils Give a Search Area Like This.

Looking Down at Coil || From Front to Back Like this (||)

If you Could See a Side View of the Signal |_|

A Concentric Looking Down (O)

If you could see a Side view V

thanks for all the info, there is just a ton of info and its hard to sort through to find some truth and not just marketing strategies

There was some info on the 15 " WOT coils for the explorer on the minelab yahoo groups that sounded interesting. I thought about trying out one, too bad the pics I have seen of it show it as pink or salmon in color. Definately have to paint it! But performance wise, it sounds promising.

WOT stands for Wonderful Orange Thing.

And in My Opinion

I use the WOT on my Quattro and has made life much better when hunting the beach. I haven't really noticed much more depth, but it definitly covers a lot more area which I think is a real plus.

I can't say how it'll do in regular soil or trashy areas, as I have been only hunting the beach since I got it.

doesn't look orange, looks pink but I am curious what your real opinion of it is, dont want to waste money if there is valid opposing viewpoints. More data please.

MY REAL OPINON IS WHAT I SAID.

? On My SOVEREIGN, I got SO use to it, I Hardly EVER Switched.

I have Heard it Isn't as Good on the Explorer at Increasing Depth as It is on The Sovereign. BUT you Still Have an 18" Coverage Compared to 10" or 10.5"

I havn't Purchased one For My Explorer " Y E T "

Sorry, missed that above since it didn't have WOT thing in it. I likely will end up getting one since I just can't have enough tools it seems ;)

I am definately going to find a way to change it's color!

Thanks for the info

I think it's like I said, the aftermarkets are for special applications.? I didn't mean they were no good, probablly should not have said "gimmic".? If it will do something your present coil does not do or there isn't a coil made by the dealer that will do the same thing, and....not a but but an and.....if you can afford it, by all means go for it.? For instance, I have a large over size coil I bought for one of my detectors for covering larger areas and to gain more depth. I just had to have it!? ?But after using it a few times......here's that but..... but it was so darn heavy and made my detector so out of balance that I doubt I? will ever use it much!? But....another but... but if I ever need it I will have it.? ? I also have the smaller "hotshot" type coil which I do use? quite a bit.? Some people don't coin shoot, but I do occasionally and it's great for finding coins or anything else that is next to anything that interferes with your signal such as a metal fence, a metal building, grand stands, etc.? The drawback to the small coil is that it is so small it takes much longer to cover an area although it helps sort out things in a trashy area.? Also, it is easy to miss a good target because it is so difficult to overlap your swing with it.? That's how I really feel about aftermarket coils! ::)? JIM

Its like anything else, one answer doesn't work for all applications. Same with detectors, most of us it seems have more than one for various purposes. I have smaller coils for when I need them, one I use most of the time and was thinking the Wonderful Orange Thing would be good in some cases. Just a matter of being equipped better for more appkications and of course depends on how serious you are on the hobby as far as investment goes.
