if you know anybody that does heating and air conditioning see if they will give you the old units they replace....alot of these guys don't fool with scrapping these...i guess they make enough just installing them...anyway the cooling coils inside the outside units and the A coils in the air handler are copper and aluminum....you can sell them whole or separate them if you have the energy....my next trip to the scrap yard I expect to get around 3000.00

thanks for the tip i never thought of that ;)
wow thats a lot of $$ congrads

do they still use freon in the new units or is it o-zone safe.

Superduty,

maybe you should tell that to all the goverment agencies we have in the usa that have leaky a/c units on thier buildings.by law us a/c techs if we go out on a call and see a leaky a/c unit.we have to recomend replaceing it.

What is the easiest way to cut the copper u's off the ends in order to remove the straps?

I use a chop saw to cut right next to the straps, then pull out the u pieces with pliers. That's what I've been doing, although I'm not totally satisfied it. Somewhat a pain pulling out the u pieces Maybe using a bandsaw along the outside of the straps would allow the straps to come off from the tubes easily. I don't have a band saw though.

I just pulled apart a portable AC unit yesterday, and it was a monster and yielded ten pounds of clean cu al radiator core. Got $14 (Canadian dollars, so actually thats $15 American) for it at the scrap yard. I took it in with 300 lb of white goods and 6 lb of copper wire and went home $46 richer. That's almost fifty USD. Sorry guys, but after years of the USD being worth $1.50 CAN I gotta gloat a bit.

to cut the ends off use a grinder (4 1/2") , cut the u shaped ends completely off and tap the steel strap off with a hammer.

I was using a grinder but, now I am using a sawzall I cut the u's and they fall right into a 5 gallon bucket like a big piggy bank
