Bent and abused, but a rarity for me. How often do you in the East find S mints?

Dug up this 1893-s Barber dime yesterday in an old orchard. The S was hard to see at first but was very apparent under a loupe. Being in the East, it's rare that I even dig up a Memorial cent with an S mintmark. So despite its pretty terrible appearance, it's a special find for me.

Thanks for looking!

Silver is silver, at least your dime has "character", congratulations! :occasion14:

She just dancing....she was happy to be found after being lost for so long.....Congrats!!!

We sure don't see many "s" mint marks here in Maryland. I estimate that only 1% of my dug coins have the S. Congrats on your Barber dime, its a keeper for sure.

I moved to NC from Bethesda a couple years ago, and it was a rare thing for me just as it is for you.

We should have a mint mark exchange on here to trade duplicate minted coins...I don't think I have ever dug a Philly mint coin.
My first silver was a barber "s" dime. I get nostalgic.... Congrats!

Great job finding the S mint Barber! I've found just over 60 S mint keepers of the 2K+ ones I've located, so maybe 2-3%- not very common here in Mass or on the east coast in general. Congrats on a great coin!!

My first dug Barber coin (in upstate NY) was a well worn 1905-S dime. My best dug coin of all time was a 1903-S dime in VF/XF that is worth over $500 - also found in upstate NY. What a surprise. I also dug a 1905-S half in the same county, an 1890-S Seated dime, and a 1916-S Mercury dime. When I used to search penny rolls as a teenager, I would agree with others that only about 1-2% of the wheatback cents I found were "S" mints, though. It seems that "S" mint wheat cents were plucked from circulation by collectors, but the Barber coins did not necessarily get picked over so well.

Well done my man!

I do not see many "s" mint marks on ANY coins... not to mention 1800s silver coins.

Sometimes i like imperfect coins better than nice ones. Something about it having a story to tell makes it more interesting. Maybe just me :)

Congrats! I've still yet to find old silver with my detector.

I know exactly what you mean. And you'll be digging up some old silver before long, no doubt

I'll take a Barber in any shape it comes - Congratulations!

I never counted. But I know I have, from most to least: Philly, Denver, San Francisco, Carson City, New Orleans.

I dig mostly in NJ and have dug roughly 1000 us silver coins
