I believe you have a box plate instead of a buckle, the pieces on the back are a dead give away. Great find by the way, she is beautiful :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

I wouldnt be complaining about not finding and silver or wheaties if I found a buckle like that
 

i did find the name (j i pittman) on the back you can barely see it in these photos. does that add anything to it?

Also - PBK's second link indicates that JI Pitman is the rarest of these marks. nice find!
 

My understanding is that many Union soldiers took their rifled muskets home from the war, and used them for years afterwards. I suspect a cartridge box that one had carried in the war would serve just fine to hold hunting cartidges 20 years later. It seems to me that on this theory, a Civil War cartidge box plate could turn up just about anywhere.
