Bell... Not like one I've seen posted before.

Found in PA about an inch down in what I'm pretty sure is fill dirt from somewhere else. The clacker was iron, as the bell was filled with rust. ANy idea of use or age?

Nice bell But unless you can find out where the dirt is from.

Hard to say.

Home site : Maybe a Dinner bell. or Collector bell.

Church/Cemetery site. : So somone could be "saved by the bell"

Farm site:, Maybe used in place of cow bell ?

Store Site: door / customer alert bell

I'd be guessing at the age, it looks like a neat bell, but it also looks crudely made, 1840 ish?? Guessing!

I found a bell pretty close to that one. It has the same kind of cut design, but just a few more cuts to the design. Mine is broken off a little above the bell and it looks like yours is broken to. I think there was another piece above the ring on yours. My opinion is that it is a maids bell or someone who was bed ridden because of the size. The town that I found this in burned to the ground in 1911. The bell you have is a little bit cruder than mine so I think that yours is older. This is just a guess but 1880's to 1890's. Nice find.

I think I've seen several of these brass bells tied on a piece of twine and dangled outside. You shake it like a doorbell and holler "yoohoo" when you come to visit.

Almost has "Indian" markings. From India, "Indian" markings. Great find!

i have a few of this type looking bell
here is link to what i have, about the fourth bell
down on pg, is what i have looks sorta like yours
not sure of age, i think india has been makeing
them for at least 50 yrs, they have a nice tone
when they are intact, something to do with the
iron hitting the brass, and the size of the iron ball thing
makes for the pitch i think

Totally sold on this one, THANKS ce0909! Not only do the ones one those website look very close to mine, but thinking about my travels to India, it does remind meof the stuff sold in their trinket shops. Thanks!
