First metal detecting hunt in quite some time. Detected behind what was once an old railroad station here in town but is now overgrown woods. Many of the old fence posts and one telephone pole remain along the old rail bed. Managed to find 3 Gayner glass telephone pole insulators circa 1920-1923, 2 brown porcelain telephone pole/electric line insulators circa early 1900s, an old industrial knife, a piece of the old wire fencing, many old railroad spikes, what I believe to be an old aluminum railroad token although too worn to make out, a 1960s New Jersey license plate, etc.Shown is the old rail station as it once stood and as it is today.View attachment 1522339View attachment 1522339View attachment 1522340View attachment 1522341View attachment 1522341View attachment 1522342View attachment 1522343 22770047_10203543531227061_6446912453102647840_o.jpg22555745_10203535714111638_2064440875551989466_o.jpgIMG_1724.JPGIMG_1722.JPGIMG_1728.JPGIMG_1727.JPG22769639_10203543547827476_3911624103514415021_o.jpgIMG_1725.JPG

Love the old glass and porcelain relics. Looks like a nice spot in the woods for some goodies.:icon_thumright:

Great finds. Its always nice to see the older telephone pole insulators. Some of those are very collectible.

Hey old RR man. I had the joy of being a gandy dancer for the Burlington Northern Rail Road for three months back in 1981. It was some very hard work but, I had a blast! I got real good at driving spikes with a spike maul. I could burry them in three swings. Worked all over northern Illinois and up laying one mile sections of track along the Mississippi River where I was literally in Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin at the same time. Some crazy memories from those days!:occasion14::drunken_smilie:

Nice work! Make sure you check any railroad ties you see for date nails.

2moshers, not to "Highjack" this thread, because I think you found a really good place, and I'd be all over it with a small coil, a brief answer to Mr. Kurios, go figure, I hired into the RR in 1981 also, and yes I ended up working out of 10 different states. I can say that over those years I've nearly been drowned, baked, fried and frozen to death it seemed a number of times. As I've told people when asked about it, "No, it's not like they can bring the tracks indoors to work on". In the 80's it could be some fun, but over the years with more rules and reg's, no matter what you were doing or how you were doing it, you were in violation of some rule somehow. I'm glad I did it all, but I'm glad it's over. Been retired for three yrs. now, and never looked back. All I focus on now is my 3 keys to happiness, Eat, Sleep, & Metal Detect.
