Yesterday morning I headed back to an 1865 one-room schoolhouse that I first detected two years ago and noticed that developers had cleared the land behind the school. I had always wanted to detect this area, but for years it has been heavily overgrown. I quickly found that a lot of residential trash has been dumped here over the years. I stayed here for an hour finding the McClary appliance tag, a couple of brass buckles and the ‘Pepper’ dog tag. As I dug Pepper’s tag all I could think was, I hope this isn’t where he was buried. :icon_scratch:

I decided to give the archeology site another shot, as we’ve been receiving some heavy rain lately and the planting is about three weeks behind in our area. Once again, the ‘eyeball finds’ were better then what the detector found. My first find was the unusual brass buckle, followed by a small piece of what I considered to be ‘tubular scrap brass’ when I found it. It was only after washing it that I discovered all of the writing on it. It say’s, “FLETCHER & WESTWOOD SINGULARS, NEEDLE CASE / TRADEMARK, BYROYAL LETTERS PATENT”. There’s even evidence remaining that this piece was originally gold gilt. I also found an umbrella tip, the pewter top to a tobacco jar and what I think might be a brass shutter or window latch. I made a couple of interesting ‘eyeball finds’ here as well. The first was the base to what I feel may have been a porcelain pocket watch stand, marked on the base ‘4YCH’. But my best find of the day has to be the gray stoneware ink pot.

Thanks very much for looking!
Dave

PS. The last pic is the e-card that I wanted to send my wife... but I didn't. :laughing7:

Thank you Sir. :icon_thumright:
I realize a lot of guys want to keep their sites private.
As far as I'm concerned, a find is just an object, but with context and perspective I feel it makes an everyday object more interesting.

This is the second stoneware ink I've found... here's a pic of the first one I found in 2016.

Hi, nice hunt with some really nice finds. Congrats:icon_thumleft: I love the inkwell you found. I have 2 inkwells similar to yours but mine was not a find, i bought mine at a antique shop.

Nice bunch of saves Dave. I like the stoneware inkwell too. The find that I think really cleaned up well was the Mc Clary appliance badge. I like your display of finds also. Very nice. Congrats on the finds and thanks for the story and photos.

Finding a 'keeper' at an antique shop or thrift shop can be very gratifying as well Brendan!
I'm keeping an eye on this site in the hopes that they may disc the soil one last time.

Best of luck to you in South Africa mate,
Dave

Thank you Hawks, as always I'm grateful for your support! :occasion14:
Don't forget, all of these finds came from a site where archeologists dug and sifted for almost four months last year. :laughing7:

I had to use my brass wire bench polisher to bring up the detail on the McClary Appliance badge.
I'm thinking it dates from the 1920s -30s.

Great Adventure Dave !
