Prospecting
Hey everyone. I have had a pan for awhile now, just practicing in my back yard but wanting to go out and use it to find some real gold. Seems like a fun hobby. I don't know where to go though, I don't want to join GPAA because I hear their claims have been cleaned of all the gold. I have heard something about checking topographic maps and BLM maps or something but that is way over my head. Anyone know of any good tutorials or guides on how to find places with gold?

Hello from White Plains, New York! I don't know where you live, but you need to join a gold prospecting club, just to learn the basics. You'll end up wasting a lot of money and time if you try and learn on your own. Dealers and scammers will eat you alive.

I live in AZ, and I figured rather than join a club with overworked claims, I would just go out into some public land that is known for having gold, and start panning. Maybe it isn't that easy though?

Some public land is more hunted out than "claimed" land. I recommend joining a prospecting club also. You can learn a lot from the veterans there and maybe find a partner that knows where to go to get the gold.

Lynx Creek at Fain Park? Not many other "public" places that have gold worth hunting. People have beat Rich Hill to death since 1863, but a 8oz specimen came out of the alluvial plain late last year, along with almost a half-pound (Troy) of pickers, since the season started back in September. Don't kid yourself about club claims. Depends on the club and the claims - and how hard and smart you are willing to work.

Ah I see, do you know of any clubs with good claims near Phoenix? I hear the Agua Fria river has some gold.
