I got a chance to hunt a house that belonged to the grandparents of my neighbor. It belongs to somebody else now who has rented it out over the years. I was to find out that one of those renters had a metal detector and it appears that he cherry picked the place. We did manage to find some clad coins but no silver.
This house was built in the 1940's and there was no electric until the early 50's. I did manage to dig out a nice old brass gaslight valve.

I love the old ornate gas valve. They designed even a simple gas valve with such grace and beauty back in the day. Now everything is plastic and designed with the intent to fail. You could no doubt clean that valve up and more than likely get it back into a functional part. Try that with today's technology. Oh, and them damned CHERRY PICKERS!!! :BangHead::laughing7:

when I get gas_______I crack a smile-----very easy sale to restoration craftsmen :happysmiley:

a torch can help to free the valve of crud, then clean it without killin' the patina :icon_thumleft::icon_thumright:

Nice brass valve !! He must of missed that one. Yeah those cherry pickers are everywhere....::)

Cool valve, I really like the way they put the designs into the metal castings back then.
I dug one two yrs ago out of a cellar hole, no where close to any utilities power, gas, water. It's one of those finds that has made me go :icon_scratch: as how come it was there in the middle of nowhere.

That is so cool! I have found one that looks like yours and I thought it was some kind of old fancy barrel tap. Learned something interesting with your post, thanks! That could be a cool thread to make...

Hi nice find , Portable wood gas generator invented by German engineer Nickolaus Otto in the 1870, s used for gas house lighting in the same period. TP

I'll try to post the one I found this week-end, just to see the ressemblance.

Congratulations on the cool relic! :occasion14:
