Been awol from th'ng for 30 yrs. Have a few questions and I need your help.

I used to coin hunting almost every day for about 5 yrs but the wife, kids, my job and the military had a higher priority. Now that I'm through with the military and the kids are gone (I still have the wife) I've decided to take up the hobby again. I found your outstanding site and after reading the posts and comments I can honestly say you guys are a wealth of knowledge and rather entertaining. I intend to look for coins in local parks, older homes, old abandoned home sites and a rather large town that was going strong in the1890's to the 1920's but was totally gone by the 1950's. My question is what kind of md would you recommend. When I started reading TN, I see a lot of you talk about the Ace 250. Is this a good choice of md or would you recommend something else. How is the depth. Would it be good for old homes and the old town that is now woods. Thank you in advance for your time, knowledge and feedback.

I have an Ace 250 and get good depth. I have really just started using it though so I cant give you to much info. If you want to see what the Ace is capable of check out some of Ringfinder's older posts (happy trails) and also look for some of the older Iceberg posts, one of those guys had an Ace 250 also, maybe it was Danimal, I could be wrong though.

Welcome to T-net. Try to find a local dealer and try a few out would be my suggestion. Some are harder then others to use, some cost more, some go deeper then others. If there are no local dealers, try talking to one of our members that sell the machines, they are pretty good about matching people up with the right machine for their needs. I have heard nothing bad about the Ace 250 and a lot of our members use them. Some find this machine to be a great entry level detector, but others sware they will never get rid of them.

Once again, Welcome! ;D

Welcome PJ,

An old town in the woods could keep you busy for a long time, sounds like fun.

Re: Been awol from th'ng for 30 yrs. Have a few questions and I need your help.

Hi PJ, I got an Ace 250 for Christmas and I am very pleased with it's depth. I have been at this for 30 years and also have to say that I'm a die hard Garrett man too. They are the only ones I have ever owned. I found an Indian head cent at 8 inches and it picked it up good. I have found a bunch of coins at 6 plus inches. Some people on here don't give the Ace 250 very much credit. I don't know if they have tried them and found them to be not as good as others or they just won't believe a detector that cheap could be that good???...You will get plenty of signals at 8+ inches with the Ace. I like mine just fine and the 4 AA batteries last a long time in it. Good luck with your decision and I'm sure you will get plenty of informed opinions here. DANGLANGLEY

Welcome to TNet PJ!...I did real well in my first year detecting using an ACE250. There's quite a few of us that let the machine's performance do the talking, and NOT it's pricetag.

Here's a link to a post I did a while back that shows most of my 2006 silver and older coins found with my ACE.

You won't find a better machine for under $500.00!!

Welcome back. Buy what you can afford. The Ace250 is a good place to start. 8)

Ace 250 is a good entry level detector. It depends on your budget. If you can afford a better detector than i suggest definitely going that route. I've used one before. It seems to do pretty good at identification but I had trouble pinpointing with it.I'm used to a more expensive detector. I know there are alot of people here on this site who only use an ace 250 and i hope i don't offend them by my words since I am not trying to do that but it does seem that there are alot of sensitive detectorists out there. It seems that people get very attatched to their machines. I know I have. Mine has found me many awesome finds. It is great that you are able to get back in this cool hobby.

This is a good post. I also agree with Stormtroopers post about going to a dealer and trying them out. The point is the Ace 250 is an excellent entry level detector. However, you are already an experienced detectorist and I can see if you become addicted again you will move up to a mid range or high end detector shortly.

Going to a metal detector dealer gives you a chance to swing the detector- to see how you like the weight and balance. Also a lot depends on your viewpoint on what you want or need in a detector. Lots of things like "Do I want VDI"- "Do I want bells and whistles or just turn on and go". Length of "learning Curve"? Stick to a name brand manufacturer- Not something most people have never heard of.

The Ace 250 is the standard today for entry level detectors. However, mid range and high end detectors?Well everyone thinks their detector is tops and guess what? They are all right as there are a lot of great detectors out there. We all have our own bias.

My bias for a new high end detector would be the new Fisher F75 which just came out a couple of weeks ago. A lot of favorable reviews on this newest detector for our hobby. It would just be what I would buy as I would use it for nugget hunting as well as coin shooting. You need to find "your favorite".

Re: Been awol from th'ng for 30 yrs. Have a few questions and I need your help.

all of the comments here are valid, but the bottom line is, look for the detector that you feel comfortable with, going to a dealer is a good idea, but remember, they are selling a product, so they might be a little biased according to their product. My advice is ask other detectorists what they are using, and what they are looking for and maybe that will help, if all else fails go back the manufaturer you feel comfortable with from previous experience, but do stay with a name brand that is familiar.

Re: Been awol from th'ng for 30 yrs. Have a few questions and I need your help.

I use a Tesoro Cibola and I have been more than happy with it. It's price is comparable to the 250. I looked into the ACE250 but I just ended up getting this one. It's a good machine with spot-on pinpointing however it does not use an ID screen or any other screen for that matter. You have to learn the different tones the machine gives you, I have gotten to the point where I can tell you what kind of item the machine is signaling. Look around good before you buy, you'll find the right one................there's my 2 cents. Good Luck!

I live in central wi all i've ever used are whites detectors. have hunted with others that used fishers but they seemed to miss a lot of deep coins may have just been the way they hunted. i have a dfx i bought myself for my 66th birthday last year didnt get to use it much last year will make up for it this year. if you are close to me e-mail me i have a 6000d pro plus white and a 6000d pro plus sl i could let you try if the ground ever thaws out . i bought my dfx from ground view metal detectors in spencer wi kevin is very helpful in explaining how every thing works . have a great day

Re: Been awol from th'ng for 30 yrs. Have a few questions and I need your help.

I have the same problem as you. I did some MDing in late 1960s. Now i am haveing to learn some over again. I like Whites (have MXT). But from what I have read on TNet forums there are a good many good MDs out there. I have heard a lot of goodthings about the Ace250 but never used one. I would do like some of the others have said. Go to a good dealer & test some of them. Then make up your mind. BTW is PJ for your name or were you Pararesque? HH Sonny

Re: Been awol from th'ng for 30 yrs. Have a few questions and I need your help.

Hi PJ in WI and My Fellow TH'ers

I have been using Whites detectors since 1984 and while I hear good stories about other detectors i will stick with what works for me. I currently use the Whites DFX in the coin mode and I don't mess with the settings or programs. I dig every signal and remove everything I am able to for recycling. I sell the metal finds except for relics as I keep anything that is period. I recommend the Whites DFX, as I don't have issues with nor have I had any difficulty with using the detector right out of the box.

Just my two cents and worth that much at least.
