I just recieved my BeachHunter ID I got off ebay today and put it together and starting monkeying with it. I noticed whenever I adjusted the sensitivity knob it would sound off and light a light. It does this at any position of the sensitivity knob. It starts from when you first start your turn "beep" if you continue to turn the knob it is quiet but if you stop and then start to adjust "beep". Is this normal operation? Just wondering This unit was refurbished they said. It has a new coil and rod assembly with new cuff for sure. I got it from Gettysburg Electronics which is a mom and pop dealer and seemed real honest so I believe them also it has warranty till april 08.
I think I'm just being overly worried about nothing but wanted to ask you guys or gals who have owned or own one of these units. also any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not worried about the floating coil. I have hunted with my dfx in shallow water and know what to expect seeing how there basically the same coil. Thanks for the replies they are much appreciated!

Yes that's normal , They take a little getting use to. I'm still learning myself . But mine reacts the same way as yours . Your bh fine ,,,, just keep working with it I really like mine ..I'll keep you posted on my progress...Guzz1

That's normal operation. Nothing to worry about.
I keep reading the posts about floating coil on DFX and BH. I've used both in the water and the coil does NOT float.
If you want a floating coil, try the old 8 inch coils from white's.

The best tip I can give on using it, is to hunt in all metal mode and dig everything.

Cool I thought it was pobably normal.. Hey midas I referred to the floating coil statement to try and head off everyone telling me .to weight it or how annoying this was to them. I'm like you and don't think they really try to float that bad, it doesn't bother me. thanks for the tips..

klopek,

The BHID requires manual grounding every time. The BHID is an awesome detector. I have had mine 6 months and love it. It is great in wet sand. I run mine in all metal mode. The hardest part is getting used to the grounding procedure. This is what I do.

1. Make sure that the switch is in DISC mode and all the knobs are off.
2. With the detector's coil just above the ground, turn the detector on by rotating the threshold until you hear static and leave it there
3. Rotate the Sensitivity knob to the P mark (the detector will make a sound)
4. Turn the Ground knob to the middle or so. Move the coil up and down slightly rotating the Ground knob until it sounds stable (I usually leave mine around the middle plus minus)
5. Move the switch to ALL Metal mode
6. Move the coil up and down a few times to ground the detector (1 inch to 5 inches up/down)
7. Rotate the Sensitivity knob all the way (clockwise) to Max. At this point keep the coil close to the ground. Swing slowly (make sure that there are no metals nearby).
8. Slowly rotate the SENS knob counter-clockwise just a tad and keep swinging the coil slowly. After a few seconds (5 or so) you will hear a high pitch sound. At this point adjust the SENS knob up a small bit until you hear some sound. A trick I do is to swing the coil over my beach scoop and know that it is ready because of the loud noise over it.

You are ready to go. In All Metal mode the BHID is great. You will pick up deep stuff. I have found a dime in wet sand (surf) over 11 inches down. The LED lights are a godsend because the green is very accurate for coins and silver. The Yellow is gold jewelry and other metals. The Red is almost always iron.

You have a great machine!

Happy Hunting!

Thanks for the info guys.

Moe,

Do in need to switch to all metal mode with the coil above the ground and then work it up and down? I am having a hard time getting it to change the threshold sound at all with the ground knob. I also found that the ground setting affects the led target accuracy? Any further explanation for the obviously challenged would be great! I started to think that I have to pump the coil several times after adjustment to let it settle down is this right ? Thanks in advance.

Klopek,

Keep the coil down (but not touching the ground) when you switch to All Metal mode. What I do is pump the coil a few times in DISC mode and keeping the coil about 1 inch above ground I switch to ALL METAL mode. Here I pump the coil again (4-5 times). Then I increase the SENS to max and slowly swing the coil above ground evenly. For a few seconds while the SENS in max the detector appears to black out (no sound). After about 5 seconds I hear the detector come back. Here I slightly move the SENS counter clockwise while moving the coil slowly. Run the coil over a test coin and you should hear a loud sound. Depending on the type of ground you may have to adjust the ground control until the detector feels stable. In my area I keep the ground control about half way. You will have to play with these controls until you get used to the machine and the area you hunt.

Pumping the coil is good. Do this as needed.

Good luck!
Moe
