Again I read in the threads about someone having something stolen from them at the beach. The facts of life are that around the beach you are going to find thieves. Some are just opportunists but many are pros. Without becoming paranoid you can protect yourself and your belongings by just using a little common sense. In Hawaii and California we called it "Beach Etiquette".

1) Don't leave anything valuable insight, inside your vehicle.
2) If you are going to put anything valuable in your trunk or behind/under the seat, do it BEFORE you get to the beach.
3) If you are going to carry a camera, or anything valuable, out onto the sand don't leave it unattended (even if you are just strolling down to the water for a minute).
4) If you want to carry some cash use one of those little plastic, screw top containers that can be hung around your neck. In mine I carry a door key for my truck and some cash. I casually drop my truck keys between the door and seat when I lock it up.

The thieves hang around watching the sand and the parking lots. They look just like everyone else out having a good time. It only takes a second to walk by, drop a towel over their target, then casually dissapear into the crowd. It doesn't take much longer then that to pop a trunk or a door and walk off with a vehicles contents. A $5.00 tool sold at any Home Depot or Lowe's and can be carried in a shirt pocket, will allow immediate entrance to ANY vehicle and another simple tool pops the trunk. Next time you're at the beach, take some time to just people watch (and not just the eye candy....lol). You will see all types of things going on.

Have fun but use common sense and protect yourself.

If you hunt early morning or late at night, hunt in pairs and carry either a long handled scoop or a shovel. A old timer TH'er very nearly got mugged at Daytona Beach many years ago when hunting at sunrise. Two young men watched him from the walkway. Then they split up and one came from the north and the other from the south. He met that former who asked for a light for his cigarette then proceeded to meet his companion. They talked for a minute then started to walk in his direction and my buddy thought he was going to be mugged of his $600 metal detector so he walked toward the lifeguard office that had just opened up and the two men continued in the opposite direction. NEVER hunt alone.

Just use due caution and common sense. If your a little older or not too physically fit, then maybe a partner wouldn't be a bad idea, especially if your gonna hunt at night or even very early morning.I carry only my cell,my finds bag attached at waist,my detector and my scoop.ID and money goes in seperate compartment in finds bag.I'm always on the lookout for devious looking scoundrels and vagabonds.I've never even been approached but a time or two.Maybe i'm too big and menacing looking.I've never had any problems yet,but i'm waiting. ;) H.H.

Good advise deepsix! Thanks.

I was detecting at a school, alone, a couple weeks ago and four 15 or 16 year boys with one girl came walking up and were by the play structure next to where I was searching. I was kind of watching them out of the corner of my eye and one of them left the group and walked all the way around and up in back of me. I saw him and waited until he was close to me. He was constantly looking back at his buddies. Then he came right up close to me and I said "hi" and and kind of waved at him with the 8 inch bayonette that I dig with that I had kind of hidden behind my leg while swinging. The s#*% eating grin went off his face fast and he walked straight over to his buddies without even saying hi back...
how rude. :)
I didn't have any trouble the rest of the day,
but I was sure watching my back.

Smiles!

You have to be aware of what is going on around you. Many of us like to hunt alone and in some areas this isn't smart. If I am out land hunting I am usually carring a 9 mm. in my pouch, cocked & locked. At the beach you are in the open and you also have that big scoop. Keep duct tape on the detector so it looks cheap.

Boobydoo, I am all for packing heat at schools, but be careful. If those brat teenagers would have called the cops. Things would have gotten twisted around. They would have made you look like the bad guy even though we know better. I am very careful with what I take to a school grounds in the form of a digging tool. I take a garden trowel and thats about it. When kids start to gather around, I leave. I hate it when I detect something and they jump in and try to dig up the target. I leave and come back some other time.

nothing wrong with packing heat. JSUT MAKE SURE YOU DO IT LEGALLY. Check your local concealed carrry laws, or you'll be paying me, or another attorney, 3 to 5 K to attempt (probably unsuccessfully) to beat a Felony gun charge.

Oh... and some places have different laws regarding carrying on/near school property. One of the remanants of the Clinton Era gun laws.

Rather than nitro74, this is nitro's wife. My hubby's been encouraging me to join him in a hunt, something I have yet to do. We were the one's with the camera that was stolen on the beach (on my birthday, no less). I've read many a post here, gleaning what I can from both positive and negative experiences from all you treasure hunters. It's been very informative.

Yep... I think I'm ready to give it my first try :D

I appreciate what's been said about safety issues and hunting alone, let alone what "protection" to carry. Lots of good ideas. In Alaska(where I'm from), we had to worry more about bear safety than protection from people.

Again, thanks for good, sound advice.
