Got to go to Charleston SC for a long weekend, didn't get to hunt much ( about 3 hrs ) and couldn't go when the tide was where I wanted it but I did have a few interesting finds. I was very impressed with the depth of the DFX. Found two bobbie pins one at 7" and one at 5", a matchbox car door at 8", a watch battery, a silver loop earring, 8 or 10 misc. pieces of metal, half dozen clads, and a crack pipe. Not much but I can't wait for the two weeks in the summer when I know I'll get some time with the tide where I want it.

I like the tide to be low, I seem to find more and better stuff at that time. I have never had much luck to speak of when the tide is high (as it was every time I got to go this week end ). My finds have been better in the washed out areas you get at low tide and on the edge of the surf at low tide. Not scientific but it's what has worked for me.

B.G.H., I'm hunting in Myrtle Beach with an MXT and find my best luck is coming from the dry sand.? Is the DFX better in the wet sand or is that just where you seem to have better luck??
I used to wait for low tide also, but found that even then I would work the tide line and come up empty, but then I would go up to the dry sand and start getting a lot more hits.
If you live this close we should get together and hunt some time.? I haven't hunted south yet, but would love to get to Charleston or even Georgetown.

O.K., just checked out your profile and saw you weren't as close as I thought. If you ever get into this area, send me a line and we'll get together and hunt. The golf season is just firing up, and the beach-goers won't be far behind.

I don't always find a huge quantity with this method but its kinda like bass fishing, would you rather catch 10 half pounders or one or two that go 5lbs. plus. Just depends on what you like. I have probably logged about 150 beach hours and I'm definitely still learning but I can't wait to hit it again this summer with the DFX. I think most of what I found would have been missed with my Whites Classic.

I'm curious guys,.....I know the tide will pretty much determine what time you have to go but I was wondering if you guys try and hunt the tides that fall early in the morning or late in the afternoon? I ask this because I'm curous if you guys hunt when the beaches are crowded or if you wait for a tide that falls during a time when the beaches are empty?

I look at the crowds here in Florida and I'd love to just down right into the middle of everyone and start swinging but I just can't do it. I feel like a bad guy or something. I feel like I would be intruding on their space. I wouldn't walk right up to them and say, "excuse me sir, could you move your legs over a bit." :D But, you know what I mean. I can't go down there if people are all over the place, I feel weird.

How do you guys handle this? Do you guys hunt in the crowds? around people? or do you go early or late to avoid them?

Darod, For me it just depends on my schedule. My ideal situation would be to pick the area of beach I want to hunt for the day, and some time between 11:00am and 2:00pm just walk around and see what everybody's doing, where most people are sitting, if there's any football or volleyball games going on, etc.. Then I would prefer to actually start hunting around 4:00 or 5:00 when the crowd starts to shrink. It all depends on the crowds. If there's an area of beach that's usually buisy but doesn't have many people around I'll go ahead and start there until the buisy beach's dwindle down. But, if my schedule is tight, I'll just start swinging my coil in and out of the bathers. (It makes for good eye candy any way). You get a lot of questions, but I usually come up with some cute remark and go on. For example, "What are you looking for"? I explain, "I'm looking for my ex-wife's body, she has the house keys", or "Well, I'm looking for diamond rings but all I'm finding is money and diamond necklaces today".
Good luck and let me know how you usually do things. I'm not sure my way's the best?

xXx,

I normally go to the beach whenever my time permits. I'll just look and see if the sand is crowded. If it is then I won't detect. I feel funny swinging around people. I dont know,...like I'm intruding on them or something. Silly of me I guess, but I just can't get past that feeling.

So when your swinging in around them, they don't get mad at ya?

I guess it's the whole idea of the fact that I'm looking for "their" stuff that bothers me. Am I wacked or what ???

I just don't undrestand it! All these lucky beach hunters spend so much time beaching about their finds or the tide. I guess life is tough on the beach. Spotz

When I'm lucky enough to be at the beach this time of year,I'll hunt anytime of day. If it's summer I' ll only go at night or real early in the morning. Night times the way to go, find a target, put the pin light in my teeth and it's just as easy as day time without being hounded by people.

I'd love to hit a beach sometime but here in Oregon there's not alot of swimming beaches. Many places if you try to swim it's time to call the coast guard before the tide drags you out to sea. You don't last long in 40 degree water before you become crab food. But going to research some beaches and try to find a couple that have the summer crowds.

I was in Charleston at low tide several years ago down by the seawall. There was about a quarter mile of mud flats with ample evidence of trash and debris all over it. Don't know much about tides being an inlander but it seems that would have been very difficult to hunt?
