BBS 8" coil question

Just the other day my sovereign xs 2A pro started acting funny. Everything I went over would give me a short blip of non ferrous and then it nulls out. I dug up a couple of these signals and they were iron. I run my sens. in auto all the time but I went ahead and turned it all the way clockwise and still got the same thing, this is running no disc or notch also. I finally after getting aggrivated grabbed my coil wire going into the box and wiggled it, it made the signal go crazy. I took the plug that goes into the box apart and all connections seemed to be solid but I went ahead and cut the wires and resoldered them and when I hooked it back up got the same thing. I'm thinking it is in the coil wire but don't know where at, does anyone else have any ideas or have dealt with any issues like this before on coils? Do coils just go bad and quit working? I just don't know.

Re: BBS 8" coil question

its most likely the wire at the coil
or the plug.

My 1000 Coil went bad that way

Re: BBS 8" coil question

Hey Jeff, could the wire at the coil be bad and still make it to where when I wiggle it at the box it gives me the erratic sounds, because I know all my solder connections were good that I made, I tested them with the multimeter, just curious.

Depends.

how sure are you that when you wiggle it at the box
the wire at the coil isn't moving also ?

If your sure it's not, Then I'd say it's at the box connector end

Re: BBS 8" coil question

Pretty sure, i've got it zip tied all the way up the shaft but I suppose anything is possible. I'll check that end out also.

Re: BBS 8" coil question

Just figured out something interesting on this issue of mine. The guy I got the detector off of coated the whole coil in marine epoxy(looked like crap and why he did I do not know because it's waterproof) so I scraped it all off but was looking at the bottom of it last night and seen these little pinholes all in the bottom, I thought what the.... it is the epoxy still on the bottom of the coil with air bubbles in it. My question is: Do you guys think it is possible for minerals to have gotten trapped up in these air bubbles? I was at the beach with it a month ago and had no issues then. I did replace the plug going into the box and seems to be working fine now but was just curious about this.

Re: BBS 8" coil question

Mmm, I don't think it would be minerals trapped in the little holes. You would see that and anyway, in such little proportions it shouldn't affect the machine. For me it's an outright 'connection' issue. Either the pins in the plug (male to female connections) or the cable leading to the plug (near the plug) has been damaged and created a break.

Glad it's sorted though, HH! :icon_thumright:

Re: BBS 8" coil question

coil cable-conectors. cables too, can brake.
