Good day.

I was at a estate sale recently in Vermont. While kicking around outside waiting for the sale to start, I spied an old Whites detector peaking out of a box. I hoped I?d find some dug items in the house, and E42FE8D8-0C67-4FB1-8EA8-CB612AAC8A54.webpB4B9DCE9-1780-4354-A0A0-5E8ECCB66626.webp7DD4FEFC-D592-4FFB-B8FD-A1925D9DAF7C.webpB2C71E99-8DC7-4127-83D3-BB52214F03BE.webpdid find a cool one in the basement! Pretty rusty, but still a great piece for the shelf. Looking online looks like mid to late 1800?s? I can?t find a match to the angled slit where it attached to rifle?

Thanks for any help dating it.

Ffuries nailed your bayonet's correct ID... it is definitely an M-1854 Austrian socket-bayonet. The Confederacy imported a lot of them (along with the .54/.55 Austrian rifles the bayonet fit) during the 2nd American Revolution. Most were issued to troops on the CS Army Of Tennessee. I dug one in a Confederate position near the Kennesaw Mountain (GA) battlefield.

Great find of the Austrian Bayonett, and great job on the ID. I dug a nosecap off an Austrian Musket in a Pickett camp in Atlanta in the 80's. You had a good eye on spotting this bayonett. It will display well.
