Detector(s) used
Whites DFX (with 4x6 shooter DD coil and 12" spider coil), Minelab Rocco 2700. (E-Trac)
Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
I stopped at a friends house the other day to meet up with him for a hunt of some foundations on his property. I didn't find too much but while I was swinging my detector around I glanced over at the foundation I was approaching and saw this buckle lying right on top of a rock on top of the foundation.??? My friend is a bit new to the metal detecting hobby so I picked it up and walked it over to him. I said.... "You found this?... clearly you did because it was lying on top of your foundation over there." He said he found it and he put it up there thinking it was junk.:dontknow: I advised him to bring it inside and let him know it was a good colonial era find. He was surprised and thankful for the info. 116.JPG117.JPG So the moral of this story is...Don't ever cast anything aside thinking it's junk until you know for a fact that it is indeed junk... Congratulations to my friend Joe on a great find.

Nice save!

Scouts out!

Nice save! It's a good thing you are able to be there to give your friend, who is new to metal detecting, some valuable tips. No matter what stage we are in this hobby we are always learning.

I think you know my response, but still a nice 19th C save. (sorry not colonial)

Whoops. I thought those buckles were late 1700's...not 1800's...... then again, late 1700's isnt colonial either...Lol. I guess I just like that word too much..:laughing7: Never found one myself. Thanks for the info.

Sorry, it just seems a mission of mine to demystify which ever book said these were late 18th C. These are early-mid 19th C horse harness buckles, the brass & off-set bar are a give-a-way.:icon_thumright: Still I would like to add one to my collection. Your up on me...

No need to be sorry. I am definitely still learning this hobby even though I've been doing it a few years. There's always something new to learn and your knowledge is appreciated. I must admit, most of the research I do about this hobby is reading these posts and replies on TNET....:laughing7: and I remember reading here at some point that these buckles were older. That's why I referred to it as colonial era.

I think it's a cool find, but I also think that it is newer than the early 19th century, in fact I believe it could have been into the 1920s.
