Battle of Pough's Run Indianapolis
Durring the Civil War on the Eastside of Indianapolis a trainload of Copperheads were returning from a meeting on a train. I don't know how many cars or such were on the train. A group of Unionist met the train and stopped it at a creek called Pough's Run around the Tech High School area. The Unionist disarmed the Copperheads (Confederate supporters in the North.) This was refered to as the battle of Pough's Run. I believe the Copperheads were requested to throw their wepons into the Run or creek. It is possible that some items may still be found in the area. I lived in Indianapolis for 36 years and detected around the parks about 1969 through 1973. I always wanted to hunt Pough's Run but it was and probably still is a bit of a rough area peoplewise. This would be somewhere where railroad tracks would cross Pough's Run. I had read about this in a reference book or some article. It might be a nice place for a couple of MD's or more to check out.
I know we used to throw coins off the cement footbridge over the creek and Manual High School. The water stinks and was polluted with run off from Citizens Gas and Coke. I though I'd find lots of coins there and tried to hunt the water just for fun. I didn't find anything there. Maybe we threw the coins too far but I figured I'd have at least found a couple pennies there NOT! Anyway the railroad tracks still cross Pough's Run and it would be nice to hear that someone did find something there. The weapons would have included knives, pistols and possibly rifles. Some may have been recovered right around the time of the incident but some may still be rusting there. GOOD LUCK and I hope if someone trys hunting there that they do find something.
My best find in Indianapolis was a 1830 large cent in very good condition. This was found in the Fountain Square area when they were tearing down houses and laying the I-65 and I-70 highways. The largest silver I ever found was in Broad Ripple park closer to the creek but still probably within 8 to 10 feet on the top soil around the bank.
