battery problems

My metal detector a minelab 3500 has a regulator fitted running at 6volts. I want to connect a 7.2volt lithium battery but have been told this is too higher voltage and the regulator would be overloaded. The maximum level should be no greater than 6.8volts.What can I fit in line which will drop the voltage down from the 7.2 to 6.8volts. thanks neilo
