Just a guess, but from the look of the back, it may be half of an old cuff link.

My first reaction was - NOT old.

But it looks old - so I Googled Victorian cufflink.

They put all kinds of stuff on cufflinks back then. Among the animals I found wolf, opossum, owl, even a griffin (does that count as an animal?). There were famous people, club, organization, military, occupational... I even saw what they called "cheeky boy" cufflinks (nudity). :o

I didn't find a match for yours, but the style is correct for Victorian era.

looks a lot like the bacardi rum "bat" trademark --note ---in tropical areas in the old days where misquitoes often carried many diseases having a batch of bats that lived near your house was thought of as good luck since they eat misquitos by the thousands every night ( bats are a A#1 way to get rid of skeeters) --they had fruit bats near the first rum distilling area (a old storehouse) that "bat "cardi used---so it became their "good luck" trademark  folks would ask for the "bat" rum --bacardi

in the back of my mind --I seem to want to remember that a fairly high ranking spanish family had the "bat" mottiff as their symbol * but of the top of my head I can not recall exactly which one. -- valencia, fraga, barcalona, palma de mollorca, albecete are all cities in spain that have bats in their coat of arms

There was something of an analogy to the hippy movement in Victorian England at one time. Loud shirts with snakes and such. Bank of England employees were ordered not to join the "mustache" movement.
