I cracked an interesting looking rock open in my basement and I am trying to figure out if this is gold or a gold look alike. The only testing I’ve done was letting this rock chunk sit in white vinegar to see what happened. There were parts that looked like gold and turned orange (second picture), but then there are multiple spots that didn’t not change at all (picture 1). The rock I’m working on is roughly 3 ft wide, 18 inches high, by 2 ft deep so I’m hoping I struck a little gold! Haha. Thanks everyone!

I’m referring to the gold colored specs on the rock by the way. I’m having problems seeing the pictures that I uploaded to this site but can easily see them on my phones camera roll.

Are you able to see the gold colored material in it? What do you think it might be? Some of it turned orange but some of it remained.

In the first picture it is about at the centerline of the rock but halfway from horizontal center to the left side of the rock.

What’s an easy way to see if it’s gold? Can I just torch it and see if it melts?

Dont see gold

If you can brake a little piece off, then try to mash it with a knife blade. If it cracks, or breaks up it is most likely not gold. If it flattens out without breaking, it is more likely to be gold.

Like they said. Take a small sample, crush it as fine as possible. Use a fridge magnet and see it any gets attached. What is left could be gold but you would need a specific gravity test or assay to know for sure. Gold smushes, pyrite shatters.

Before you break out the jack hammer get a test kit or take some to a jeweler the odds of it being gold are slim
