Hey y’all! Found this very interesting basalt stone at an archaic site today. I’ve found several pieces of basalt on this site. However, this piece appears different. Basalt typically has a porous/jagged look but this piece is unusually rounded and smooth. Any chance this could be some sort of pecking tool? Basalt is very hard and heavy so it seems like it would be a good stone to work with. Thanks in advance!

It is very possible but you may never know.Odds are good if found on a site. The one I am showing is really the only one that I know was used for knapping. It is a flint spall. They used the rough cortex to grab the flint for reduction. As it got worn the cortex came off revealing the flint core. It was on a large site with many flakes and points and I asked an archeologist about it an he I.D it for me right away. The spall was to small to salvage the flint inside. Hope this helps.

I think you are mixing up "spall" with "nodule". A spall is a large flake knocked off of a large nodule. Gary
