A friend joined me today for a full day of hunting. I had just secured permission for a site which I had hoped would be very productive but we were completely skunked! We decided to hunt another nearby site that I've hunted in the past and have found numerous items such as a cannonball, mortar frags, military buttons and a 1550-1650 spectacle buckle. I haven't hunted this site in a couple years so I figured that my hunting style had evolved enough to make another effort worth it.
Hit on a couple musketballs right away so that gave me the green light to expect missed targets. Crusty copper came next and about an hour into the hunt I got a nice deep iron signal. Target was at about 18 inches. I first thought it was half a cannonball but when I knocked the crud off it I saw the square hole. I'm thinking it's a half of a barshot. The area this was found saw considerable military action from the early 1600s until the 1850s.
My buddy found a 4 pounder as well as a hand full of musketballs so I'm not sure who has the better find...
