A friend joined me today for a full day of hunting. I had just secured permission for a site which I had hoped would be very productive but we were completely skunked! We decided to hunt another nearby site that I've hunted in the past and have found numerous items such as a cannonball, mortar frags, military buttons and a 1550-1650 spectacle buckle. I haven't hunted this site in a couple years so I figured that my hunting style had evolved enough to make another effort worth it.

Hit on a couple musketballs right away so that gave me the green light to expect missed targets. Crusty copper came next and about an hour into the hunt I got a nice deep iron signal. Target was at about 18 inches. I first thought it was half a cannonball but when I knocked the crud off it I saw the square hole. I'm thinking it's a half of a barshot. The area this was found saw considerable military action from the early 1600s until the 1850s.

My buddy found a 4 pounder as well as a hand full of musketballs so I'm not sure who has the better find...

Wow! Great find, see if you can find the other pieces! Would make a great display.

Nice score !

No doubt about it. I'd much rather find that than the typical cannonball.

Great find there Romeo, those are rare to find indeed.
ZDD

Sweet find Romeo...I have several pieces from on and one whole one with bar...it is indeed a bar shot
Maybe the other pieces are close by?

I'm going to have a look tomorrow...close to a tree line so probably in the trees. This is very near the beach you and I detected...

That's a pretty cool piece of iron. I don't recall seeing one posted before.

A guy in the Caribbean posted one a few years ago...first I've seen lately and in this part of North America. It's in the process of being restored and will make a nice addition to my heavy iron collection!
