Been a long time since I posted here but I have been relic hunting all the while. Me and a few relic hunt buddies got together this weekend for a hunt. Highlights for today were: 3 Confederate Buttons, 2 Colonial Coins and a beautiful 1841 Seated Liberty Half Dime!!! Lots of other Civil War relics including other buttons and bullets were dug by all.
Here are a few pics of the better goodies.

Some nice fine you turned up.

Strange weight - 1oz - 10 Shillings & 10 Pence - VR being Victoria Regina (of course). I wonder if it a pistol weight or something I haven't seen yet, worth IDing!

yes ! Nice hunt and finds , the greenie is a 1773 Va. halfpenny

Thx for the ID Crusader...question...why did they use the Roman number X for the shillings and the 10 for the pence? Interesting piece...BTW what's a pistol weight?

Thanks, Erik

Excellent question Erik ..., I was going to ask the same thing but you beat me to it. Great minds think alike- heheheheh. Crusader- you are our resource on the European front of ID'ing- you guys are so lucky to be able to find 1000's of and years old cool stuff over there. Thanks for the ID's on this one but what is a "Pistol weight" ?

I assume you know the 'S' over the X means Shillings & the 'D' over 10 means pennies/pence.

I'm really not sure why the mixed 2 styles but I assume its a way of not getting muddled up.:dontknow:

The reason I throw out the pistol weight theory was because I know nothing about them. They are something to do with old guns/pistols.:dontknow:

As a weight it makes little sense to me, as it is too heavy for a coin weight but has coin values on it. Doesn't make sense as a bullion weight unless 10 shillings & 10 pence was the value of 1 oz of silver/gold in the Victorian period. If it where a pan/trade weight it has not got the proper verification marks & and the coin values would make no sense. Its odd to me & I hope you get an ID.
