This is a pic I found online in the same design as one that I found metal detecting. I read that the Ticonderoga Museum has an example like this on display. I can't find anything on this buckle anywhere as to value or demand. I found it along the St. Lawrence in an area where there was musket balls late 1700 and early 1800 coins buttons etc. Thanks in advance for any help with this. I believe this is circa 1700's. Cheers.

ty for the welcome Don, I did check your links and ty for your time helping. The one link offers almost the exact same buckle, the difference being is the crossbar with the pin is a quarter turn off in design while the frame is very close in style....

There have been many discussions about this buckle. It was "mistakenly" identified as a colonial era relic in an early book. I myself believe that the buckle is 1780-1820 time frame, and civilian (based on the age of sites where examples were dug). Others believe that it is closer to mid-1800s.

I wish we knew more. I don't think you'll find many who think it's military.

ty Buckleboy for the info and the link, some good reading on this.
