Looking at that first photo..is odd. There is a shadow of whatever that is on the wall, but no shadow of the kite string, if it is a kite string...either way thanks for posting this whatsit.
Perplexing, and has had me contemplating it since 6am heh.

The man in the window looks old, struggling to regain the pleasure of life, the kite.

He talking about life.
As you get older with all the aches and pains, your body wants to go back in time.
Your heart lives for today because that is really the only thing you have, so you enjoy what you can.
Oh, and your mind thinks about tomorrow, some thought to fill in the blanks of today.

The left photograph has better balance because it composes the interesting elements evenly placed instead of making he viewer jump to only the certer focused object.

As far as photography is concerned, there is the rule of thirds. The main attraction should be in one of the outer thirds, as you say, and it should lead your eye in the proper direction. I would have cropped out the entire window except the base part. The illusion of the picture is struggle. It gives the implication that the kite is hung up in the tree outside. Just my view. Frank
