Take yours with you. I did in April and had no problems. Oh, and I took a very cheap Walmart Bounty Hunter (all I had then) and found alot of coins for about 4 hours total hunting (see my pic). I posted it here afterwards.
The coins in some cases were laying on top of the sand. I didn't see a single other MD there.
I've since caught the fever and upgraded to a nicer machine. I'd love to go back and try it now.
Not at all. I broke it down an padded/checked it with my big bag. They looked at it (I had an inspection notice) but no worries. I stayed at the Wyndham on Cable beach. The coins were all over. I had $75 detector and found all those coins in just four hours over 3 hunts; all in dry sand. Coins were everywhere.
Oh, and I called first. Coin hunting is allowed. Relic hunting needs permission. Beach hunting is always considered coin hunting. I also talked to local cops and the hotel manager. Both they said, 'no worries.'
