There was meant to be heavy thundery showers today so I decided to grid the end nearest the car. This worked out well because not only did the showers miss us a couple of times & the worst came after we left, but the Sceat was found by me about 30 metres from the car in the first 30 mins! (Only our 2nd Sceat off this field) It was outside of the main Roman scatter.
We gridded for 6 hours.

28 Roman Coins
Broken Jetton
Viking Gaming Piece - King Piece (Didn't photo well but its the lead piece in the top right corner of picture 3 - has 7 ridges on it sides)
1912 Silver 2 Annas (Indian)
Hammered Penny of Lizzy (busted)
Saxon Sceat, Circa 700AD - Series Z, I think a type 66, just awaiting confirmation. Thought to be the head of Christ or Woden (Saxon version of Odin), with a Hound on the Reverse - RARE or VERY RARE :icon_thumright: (Our first Sceat this year, we only target ourselves 1, so job done)
UPDATE (from leading expert):
''It is good to see your first sceat of the year, which I have recorded.
This is indeed Series Z (type 66), with beast right, of which there are now 30 in EMC including your find.''

Awesome!!! Congrats!!!

Wow crusader. Amazing stuff. Viking gaming piece.. come on. So cool. Really unearthing some history there.

Funny enough it was the last dig of the day OTWBTTC in the wheat stubble field next to the one we were gridding.

Great finds Cru, the Sceat is certainly an incredible find.
I love the detail on this 1912 Silver 2 Annas coin.

When I saw it, my first thought was how similar it looked to the US Fugio Cent... upon closer inspection, I realized I needed another coffee. :laughing7:

Hope you and your Dad are keeping cool and hydrated out there.
Dave

Congrats on the Sceat!
It looks like you have a winner there for sure. I was looking at the examples on the one site and the reverse seems still a little different than one example.

In 2013 I found this type of Series Z:
http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/today-s-finds/337487-sceat-heaven.html
Turned out to be the 20th one recorded. However, there seems to be several variants of the Series Z, Type 66, & I'm unsure why they all fall under the same Type?!
In the book it refers to mine as the 'Haunted facing bust' and blundered legend around. I'm guessing thats why the letters don't match.

The same but different again.

I wonder why there hasn't been a more defined typing in these series? (Well they did include a Series Z, type 66a(i))

Query: What was the distance between these 2 Sceats 2013&2021

Looks like they lump all these into the Type 66 of which there are 3 main variants. However, since my 2013 find they have only recorded another 10 examples, so about 1 a year average. But I'm unsure of the break down of how many of these are from each of the main 3 variants, but it clearly makes it a RARE Sceat.
I now have 2 of the 3 variants, it would be amazing to get the full set!
