There was meant to be heavy thundery showers today so I decided to grid the end nearest the car. This worked out well because not only did the showers miss us a couple of times & the worst came after we left, but the Sceat was found by me about 30 metres from the car in the first 30 mins! (Only our 2nd Sceat off this field) It was outside of the main Roman scatter.
We gridded for 6 hours.
28 Roman Coins
Broken Jetton
Viking Gaming Piece - King Piece (Didn't photo well but its the lead piece in the top right corner of picture 3 - has 7 ridges on it sides)
1912 Silver 2 Annas (Indian)
Hammered Penny of Lizzy (busted)
Saxon Sceat, Circa 700AD - Series Z, I think a type 66, just awaiting confirmation. Thought to be the head of Christ or Woden (Saxon version of Odin), with a Hound on the Reverse - RARE or VERY RARE (Our first Sceat this year, we only target ourselves 1, so job done)
UPDATE (from leading expert):
''It is good to see your first sceat of the year, which I have recorded.
This is indeed Series Z (type 66), with beast right, of which there are now 30 in EMC including your find.''
