It's actually quite an ornate design on the front--in the shape of a shield, but the design is not coming through in the scans. Looks as though it may have been gilded at one point. Notice the bent attachment points on the back. It is slightly curved. Approx 1" x 3/4". Any ideas?

Try taking a pencil or crayon and doing a rub of the front it looks like there might be an embossed image under that rust you could also try electrolysis to get under that rust layer if you are really careful

It would appear to be a strap adjuster for leather or cloth. There definatly seams to be some ingraveing on the front? HH

Yes, it has a very ornate design on the front which doesn't come through in the scans. The half-moon connector on the bottom I would have thought would have given someone an indication of what it is/was. I'll try doing a rub on it this evening with a pencil and paper and maybe try some baking soda on it to get a little more detail visible.
