Hi all, I have 2 banks I use for CRH, one bank for half dollars(no issues with them) and another bank, my dump bank/pickup bank. The bank that I dump at is TD bank. TD bank also supplies me with coin boxes when I request them as long as they have enough for their business customers. A while back, I purchased a box of brinks dime($250 box)...

The issue: I went and tossed the remaining $249.90 in a pail and dumped them at TD bank's penny arcade(I had 1 keeper, 1964d)
The machine was having all kinds of problems, belt issue and whatnot. I get my bill back and it says: $234.30 :icon_scratch: and of those 2499 dimes I dumped, the machine only counted 433 making my loss of $206.70 ???

Can't be, I had $250 in dimes alone along with about $200 in other coin, making the dump a good $450 :help:

I look over in the penny bag and they are full of pennies and DIMES!!! my DIMES!!! Spoke to the manager(I go to this bank at least once a week) and she said she could not do nothing!! Clearly I am not trying to lie and get free money, there were many dimes noticeable in the penny bag. I do not know where the remaining 2067 dimes went. But, the teller said they send the bags out to get counted, and whatever is over, they get sent back.

Hopefully I will be reimbursed, anyone else have a situation like this? I am furious to be out over $206. Please, help with advise, thanks!

This happened thursday, 7/14/11- they said this should take about a week to happen, should I get my cash back or did the bank rob me?

Re: Bad situation, suggestions?!

Hopefully you get reimbursed. A $200+ shortage is rough.

This is the risk we take every time we use a coin counting machine. You're pretty much at the bank's mercy. Even if their count comes back as being "over", you cannot prove it was you that was shorted, nor can you prove exactly how much you were shorted.

On my road trips, I have seen more than one sign taped above a coin counter that said something similar to, "If you choose to use this machine, you receive the total the machine says. No exceptions. If you do not agree, then please refrain from using the machine."

In previous similar horror stories on this forum, the banks usually came through and reimbursed the person short.

The only way to guarantee that you'll never be shorted is to re-roll everything.

Re: Bad situation, suggestions?!

Your receipt should have told you what happened to your dimes. Were there 2000+ extra pennies on that receipt?

If so, you might try to talk them into selling you that bag of pennies off the machine. That way they don't lose any money, and if dimes getting counting as pennies is what caused your problem, you get your money back.

Re: Bad situation, suggestions?!

idk what you can do, just hope they credit you the missing money....

but for future i thought it was known td machines count dimes as pennies, it was posted here many times and is posted all over the internet... always thought it was weird that you go there weekly...

Re: Bad situation, suggestions?!

Had that happen over a month ago, lost just over $283 to a bank coin machine that counted dimes as pennies. I'm STILL waiting for them to make good on the shortage! I may have to just take them to court. I documented the dimes purchase from the buy bank, and I had the bank with the coin machine document the shortage and the machine breaking down during the count.

Re: Bad situation, suggestions?!

I had a situation with being short over $200 a couple months back. The bank figured out problem and deposited the correct amount, so I hope it works it out for you. Seems like you have proof and not just your word as you saw all the dimesi n the penny bag.

Good luck.

Re: Bad situation, suggestions?!

The teller took my name, account # and phone #, and yes, there were ~2000+ pennies counted

The easiest thing to do would be to buy the bag of pennies. That way you don't have to wait and hope you get credited.

Re: Bad situation, suggestions?!

My suggestion is give up dimes unless you plan to hand roll them for returns. I was a short time dime hunter when I got ripped off on the machine count as you did- twice.

Sounds like you have done everything you can to get your $$$$ back though. Hopefully the bank will reimburse you.

Arkie's idea about buying the penny bag is very good if they will let you. But if they know it has a bunch of dimes in it they probably won't and will insist on sending it off for verification.

Re: Bad situation, suggestions?!

TD bank does not allow coin bags to be purchased- especially off the machine since they hyave to be filled to be taken off :(

Re: Bad situation, suggestions?!

This is a case of your word against the machine.
If you frequent a certain bank, errors in counting (by people and machine) is bound to happen.

In one case, a teller phoned me asking if I had found an extra $100 dollar bill in my wallet after she had counted it out to me. I did not--really.

At the same time, she asked me if I my tally from the coins I dumped in the "Quick Change" machine had been right.

I told her that I had figured that I was about 17 dollars short...but no big.
She responded that they had found 16+ dollars on the floor that had not been counted. She credited it to my account, for which I was grateful.

So it was a matter that she had to trust me, and I had to trust her. There was no recourse if anybody was less than honest.

Also, you should have seen the look on the face of a teller at US bank when I told her that she had just exchanged one $100 dollar bill too many.
At first she was doubtful, but when she saw I was right, she was one grateful teller.

And that is the way it works for me. If they are major wrong in my favor, I let them know about it. When they are major wrong in their own favor, I don't expect anything but the door, but hopefully a little credibility is built up to help along the way.

Also, I do so much volume that I have no choice but to use Coinstar and Quick Change machines.
BUT

After jamming Quick Change machines a couple times (and they really ARE quick compared to Coinstar!) I have learned to keep pulling dimes and halves back down so that no big wads of coin go up the belt to confuse its little metal brain. So far, has worked for me.

Sure hope you get your money back, BB.

Re: Bad situation, suggestions?!

First thing is NEVER dump dimes at TD.

Second thing is who ever tells you that this is the risk of the hobby could be wrong depending on different branches , locations and YOU . What you need to to at next time is nicely and forcefully explain that you got shorted big time and want the bags counted which is what they will do. Too late now but next time [ no dimes at TD ] if the manager says there is nothing she can do you ask her to please check because you KNOW they can count the bags. If still no luck ask her to give you her supervisors number so you can ask about counting the bags because you know that is what they CAN do when off by that much.

Ive had this happen twice at TD and once at peoples. The second and third time it happened i was told there was NOTHING they could do but i INSISTED there was something they could do and eventually got my money refunded weeks later.

Re: Bad situation, suggestions?!

My incident occurred at a Peoples Bank. Even though it was my first time dumping dimes at that particular branch, I fully expected a very small percentage of dimes-as-pennies miscount. My experience with dumping dimes at another Peoples Bank branch was about 2 dimes per $100 miscount, so I added an extra $2 in dimes to the bag of $1000. I had run coin counting passes on the bag of dimes twice on my sorter the night before, and brought a slip with me to show her the 10,020 dimes count prior to passing her my bag of dimes.

At that branch, the tellers must dump all coins into the banks coin machine because it's not in the lobby. The banks coin machine jammed once and stopped twice more during the count with a sensor error. When the banks coin machine totalled out at $718.89 it was obvious that it had to be a wrong count due to there being no pennies in my dimes bag. At that point, she said all she could do is to pay me the wrong count, document everything, give me copies of the paperwork, and submit the bags for audit. When I went in a few weeks later I found that she had not even reported the incident to the audit department, so I did. I also kept the original dimes bag as well, as that has a transaction number that traces back to the coin machine records from when I bought the bag of dimes from another branch the day before.

BuffaloBoy, did you get copies of the paperwork for your own records? If there are any issues, be sure to follow up with the banks audit department so they know about the incident and can look into it.

Re: Bad situation, suggestions?!

First and foremost, always know exactly how much you are dumping.

That said, I recently had 2 incidents like this with dimes at 2 different TDs in back to back weeks.

I made the managers aware of it, and exactly what I was shorted, and they said that after the bags are counted by the pick up service if there was an overage I would receive my short back.

One TD put the money in my account the next day, and the other needed lots of prodding by me, but put the money back in my account in about 2 weeks.

The amounts were $246 and $466.

Good luck.

Re: Bad situation, suggestions?!

I, too, have had some problems with the Penny Arcade and dimes. It is usually pretty accurate, but a couple of times it has shorted me several dollars. I thought it was because i fed the machine too quickly. I have yet to have any major problems at People's Bank. I just have the teller check the debris cup to see if any of my half with raised ridges get booted in there. Which People's are people dumping at? I know several CRHers are dumping in Chicopee. I dump in Chicopee for convenience and Westfield because the branch manager will not order halves or sell the bags off the machine.

PS- The TD Bank of Memorial Dr. in Chicopee now has a $300 bag limit on half dollars instead of $100. The teller told me they did it for us :).

I saw something similar posted on a coin counter yesterday. Haven't used this one in a few weeks because it always seemed to be down when I went there, but the sign was not there before. The coin machines I use have always been spot on (except for a few dimes counted as pennies once in a while), but seeing this makes me think again before using them, or at least this one.

I typically don't count my coins before each dump, just throw a bunch in a bag and go. I do add up the receipts at the end to verify the totals match, but I would have no proof which coin machine shorted me then. Seeing all your posts about being shorted has me thinking I may change my strategy.

Re: Bad situation, suggestions?!

wow, I'd be mad. That's terrible, and the manager should have been able to do something. I've heard similar stories where the managers have stepped up right away because they know the machines can be faulty sometimes. Good luck, i hope you get your money back.

Re: Bad situation, suggestions?!

Got shorted two bucks once, dimes counted as pennies. The teller was very nice and apologized.Quit doing paper wrap after that.My banks count clear wrap Brinks rolls and hand over the full amount. It differs in places but I found no difference in paper vs plastic.

Re: Bad situation, suggestions?!

Can't help you now but in the future run a set amount through and cash out. Maybe five or ten rolls. You will know if there is trouble brewing and catch it early plus you will have the empty rolls to prove your point.
