Backmark question

Can someone explain to me the difference in "colour" and "color"? Was the first used on British made buttons and the second on American made ones?
Or, if they were both used by the same makers when did they change from one to the other?

You're on the right track. British spelling vs. American spelling. I don't know if companies used both spellings to maximize their sales or not, but I would doubt that they went to the trouble of having punches to stamp two versions of the backmark.

The Brits spell things differently...color-colour, rumor-rumour, old-ould, potato-potatoe and they also drive on the wrong side of the road and have too many traditions...
