Backmark on doublet button?

Been trying to figure out what this says for a while now and figured I'd throw it out here.
Not often do these conical pewters show up, it seems to have a pattern of triangles on front and the letters that I can make out, I'm sure you can too.
Appears French if I were to guess, when first seen in field I thought I saw 'Louis' but not so much now.
Any info about when buttons began having marks would be appreciated. (late 18th C?)
If that is the case then I've learned that shape and size alone are not positive diagnostics for a doublet button.

These are replica buttons listed as Tudor era "Dudley" buttons (for reenactors):

Thanks Sut and Matt,
I find 'Douves' in French dictionary meaning a moat or ditch,

Here's a couple others. If there's no dissent that the OP button is likely 17th C or earlier I'll greencheck this one. HH all.
