Hello All,

I'm trying get a rough date for two items I recently found. The first is a flat button with the maker's mark

BA_ _ E R DAVIS BOROUGH

I don't know if there are any letters between the first word and "Davis" or not, but the button certainly reads "Borough" at the bottom.

Here are two photos--taken at slightly different angles:

The second item is a pewter spoon handle. I can only read a few letters of the maker's stamp. ____ T _ N I(?)

Here's a photo of this item:

Any help is much appreciated.

Best Wishes,

Buckles

I know I'm wrong but I can't resist suggesting the missing letters on the spoon are TI then A then C ;D

Button looks like Barber to me.

Doh! Looking at it, the letter (partially visible) before the first "T" looks like a vertical stroke, rather than a diagonal one like the right half of an "A"--but I guess it's a possibility. :icon_scratch: I don't know why I didn't think of that...Maybe I'm used to seeing it on other things besides silverware.

There's a good post on cleaning buttons you might want to try.... Just joking man :D Seriously though, I have dug well over a thousand flat buttons and never seen that back mark. If I owned that button, I would take a SOS pad and lightly clean the back or add some olive oil to it. I'm sure you have your methods, I'm saying this because there is still build up on the back. Nice finds!
Dave.

I dont think its Patent for several reasons, such as the one you stated. Another would be that there is no applied, pending, or date following it.

Big Cy--

I don't believe it says "patent"--but I think I've seen some pieces marked "Patent" before with no date. They were old pieces as I recall...pre CW at least, and perhaps English or British pieces. This is all very foggy...

I don't know that the pewter piece can be ID'ed, but my gut feeling is that the button should be able to be ID'ed. :-\

That's what I was thinking about family name..
It might be Italian as they put thier names on pieces they produced.
But if this piece is Pewter, then I'm not finding anything on this particular ending..
that 3rd to the last letter, seems to have a "foot" on it.. through extrapolation it could possibly be guessed..
Very Interesting.. I keep coming back to it..
any possiblity on getting a higher res photo?

The piece is certainly pewter. 100% positive.

I'll try to get a better photo of it. I'm guessing the button is an obscure manufacturer.

I have a Dictionary of Marks and under American Pewterers I found this.
Taunton Britannia Mfg Co: (1830-1835) Taunton , Mass.
That might be Britannia on the pewter piece you have.
Hope this is it.

I'll buy that for a dollar. :) Thanks!

Now to the button... I still haven't been able to find anything about that one.

I'm a pretty good googler lol... I usually only post here when I can't come up with much. No sense troubling the ID crew for an easy one  Just wondered if someone might have a copy of Tice laying about--but I don't know if that resource would even list the button, since I think it may be of British manufacture.

Dang.

Well, maybe we'll get a nice Capped Bust so that we can date our site. :) I had a hunch that it was pre-1830, and the pewter mark seems to confirm that, if correct.

Best Wishes,
