Headed back out to the Cape again to detect in the other direction from the day before. Mostly found some more copper and brass sheeting/plates. My best guess is that most of these are from old ships that either wrecked off the Cape or just lost the pieces along the way in or out of the Bay. I looked it up and it appears that the British were the first to use them on all their ships (began experimenting with it in the Early/Mid 1700's) in the late 1700's. With the war in the colonies and with both France and Spain, it allowed the British Navy to keep their ships at sea longer and not return home for maintenance to remove worm eaten wood. I've been hoping for a way to ID some these but so far (until now) the only marks were the nail or rivet holes where they were attached (if the piece was bug enough). Here are the pictures:
The "bling" looks to be part of a watch or bracelet. The mark is 12K GF (Gold Filled) and not sure if what looks like turquoise or opal is actually real (prob not). The brass piece that is marked is one thing I need help with. I did a rubbing of it as well and can't pull off any other info. It looks like the letters (you can see) say' ..OW METAL...' and the number "18" in the center of the oval logo. Any ideas on this one? May help to dating how old it could be or where it came from. In addition to all of the marine traffic that passes this location, the place has had a military presence here since the 1700's. Thanks for looking and any ideas are appreciated!
