the hammer is solid copper, 3 in long, 5/8 wide, and 3.3 ounces. current bid on ebay is $5.49. the key paddles are 90 degrees rotated from the loop, can't find any that are similar. invited a newbie rookie to the hunt with his Delta 4000, he nails a 1937 NY dog license, crotal bell, another skeleton key. the only coins on this 1 acre site are Indians, iron is 1 piece per 3 inches.

that's a very old hand forged hammer! very nice finds!

that old hand forged hammer is more than old iron work of forging that tool by a blacksmith for the wood work of a carpenter . Pride of early tradesmen and Made in the USA ... CMD luvs those old iron relics , Nice digs man

It looks to me to be a strap hammer from the mid to late 1700s,hand forged and used for carpentry. Just a guess.

Nice finds! Your key was used on a keg spigot and could be 18th or early 19th century.

thanks for the info, however I want to stress it is solid copper, non-magnetic. one claw had a slight bend that I was able to fix with pliers, metal is quite soft.

Since you are in Port Ewen the hammer was probably used (think no sparks) in some kind of gun powder manufacturing areas. I hear that on occasion you can still find brass mule shoes from the old salt peter mines around Eddyville...

what Michellets said - you also find a lot of brass/bronze tools wherever they were working with gas - otherwise that hammer is inefficient as brass/copper will wear out a lot faster than iron/steel
