I have been digging out a town's old dumpsite that was shutdown in 1984 and left to rot away. After probing and finding a place to start the dig, I started pulling out very nice bottles, some even being RARE. See my other posts about the dump site for more info. Anyway I went on a Thanksgiving hunt by myself today and spent 3.5 hours there digging. I was digging some nice, turn of the century dark beer bottles and than got into a nice honey hole of medicines. Pulled out quite a few Gastoria's, some Chicago ones, Shoe Polish, and blank ones of course. Then I started pulling out broken Clinton, Iowa Arlen and Ingwersen 1890's applied crown bottles. I pulled 3 whole ones, including a harder to find Slug-plate late 1890's applied crown. I pulled a Chicago Brewery Slug-Plate blob top bottle and another DeWitt, Iowa bottle (this one in better shape) applied crown top, handblown, late 1800's. I also got several different pontiled wines and than here came the best one:

Eagle Bottling Wks
Davenport, Iowa

1880's Slug-Plate Hutchinson bottle!

This is my first Hutchinson bottle dug, and i've only dug there 4 different times, and a hutch already! Wooh! Was so happy I swore when I was recording the video (edited video coming later).

I also got a broken bitters bottle.. not sure what is so great about bitters bottle maybe someone can tell me more about them but for some reason I always think they are worth tons.

Going back out tomorrow in the early morning to start digging again. Gotta shovel the pit out though, not looking forward to shoveling useless pieces of glass and metal 6 feet from the surface.

I'll post more pics when the dig is complete, probably be a few months just the good stuff for now.

HH!

You would think the older states would all be fenced off and all the dumps would be covered by dirt and off limits. Here in Oklahoma there is not one bit of open space unless you go to the hills some call them mountians. Enjoy and good luck on finding more great stuff.

This one is fenced off, but half of the fence is gone. It's secluded in the woods. It's between a County Highway and railroad property. Already had a trooper come by and run my plates, went to go talk to him but he left before I got there. I haven't been hassled by anyone, and for the few people that do know, they are praising and glad that im out doing something a teenager usually wouldn't be doing (most are out trying drugs or such). So I mean unless I get told I can't be there, im still going to go there because there is no sign saying no trespassing or no digging. Plus some of the stuff is being donated to the local historical society so if I were to be hassled by the cops i'd just tell them about it but im really not worried about it because im not bothering anyone, and everything will be filled in when im done. The only way people would even know I was out there is because my car is parked off its old grass entrance off the road backed in.

Those are some nice bottles. I can relate to town dumps. We have one here in my hometown that dates back pretty far and I had loads of fun digging them. Good luck and congrats............Rich

Did you have to aquire permission to dig it or did you just dig it as is?

No permission needed. It on the outskirts of town in a wooded area, county owned land, everybody goes deer & small game hunting there, plus digging, hiking, whatever, local officials couldn't care less. Only problem, its snake infested there, one summer I encountered at least 6 black snakes, or racers. They are easy to spot and just lay out in the sun.......Rich
