Looks to me like it is a old pewter button.
But that is my guess

The broken piece is part of a buckle or a plate frame. It could be a Colonial shoe buckle. If so, it will be curved. The nickle-sized item is a button. Since it is cracked, it may be a "coated" button where the inside is a different metal than the inside. I have a couple that have cracked open in several places but they tend to be brass/copper and zinc. Try and see if the crack is due to something happening inside the button or just a "Button meets Plow" problem.

The button is a moulded pewter type of the late 18th C.

The buckle is a similar date shoe buckle.
