Was detecting a yard and the homeowner brought this to me and said his grandfather gave it to him . I looked up Babbitt metal and found pictures of different ones but not this exact one . What were they used for , seems to fancy of a casting to just be melted down . Any help on its purpose plz or is it just nice craftsmanship on a usable item. Its about the size of a tea saucer and around 5 lbs

Babbitt Is an early bearing material, before the wide use of ball and roller bearings. Almost every early engine, gas/oil/steam, and other types of machinery used Babbitt. Some engines today still us Babbitt coated copper for bearings. Your piece looks to be some kind of commemorative?

I read that online , my question was more to knowing if this is how they were smelted for use or is this a display piece

All the babbitt that I have used was in block or stick form. Your piece must be a special casting for display??

Sales sample or gift for regular customers. Something for salesmen to hand out as perks.

I saw that one when i looked , wasn't able to find one with the same city markings

Hi, didn't realize you were looking for one with the same city markings, or I'd kept looking. The paperweight just shows they were more of a display piece and not intended for smelting.

Smelting is the process of extracting metal from ore, turning stone into metal. To cast things from metal one merely melts the metal, it is not smelted.
