B,E,&D baggage tag

Here's an old baggage tag from a packet boat which traveled the James River Canal from Richmond, Va. to Lynchburg, Va. and back during the mid 1800's. Ironically, this makes the second of these I have found. There are only two others that have been documented to the best of my knowledge. I consider myself extremely lucky!

That's a great find. Did you have that featured on Scottsville Museum's website?

Thank you, and yes--one is on display at the museum as well as details on this one.

Never say "Lucky" It was your research & skill with a detector that got you this keeper!

Re: B,E,&D baggage tag

The BE&D initials stand for the initials of Boyd, Edmunds, and Davenport, the dominant packet (passenger) boat company on the James River and Kanawha Canal which was organized in March 1842.

as referred to above.

Yes, I've lived in Scottsville all my life.

Thanks for the perk, but sometimes I do get lucky--I had just turned on the detector and tripped over a log....when the head of the detector hit the ground, it registered this find! Still, after forty years of enjoying this hobby, even a blind hog finds an acorn every now and then.

Surprised we haven't crossed paths over the years .. or maybe we have. I don't live there but hunted there quite a bit in the years gone by. Haven't been there much in the past several years, though.

Re: B,E,&D baggage tag

creskol,
I'm surprised we haven't met too--or maybe we did and didn't know it! If you want to, you can send a PM and I will send along my email address. If not, no problem!

Re: B,E,&D baggage tag

That is great tag. You don't see too many canal tags. If they were incorporated in 1842, the railroads put them out of business soon afterward.

Thanks, Steve, and also Patriot. Jack. ( If you ever hear of any others turning up, please notify the Virginia Canals and Navigation Society--they're very anxious to hear about these. You would think many more would have been found, but so far only four have been documented.)
