My wife recently found about 10 of these buttons along with some mule shoes, bullets, purple glass pieces. They were found in what appears to have been a camp of some sort along the Gila river in SW AZ. I understand the Morman Battalion marched through this area around 1846 and 1847. I originally thought these could have been uniform items from them but the dates that Horstmann Allien made the buttons don't work out. NOTE: Most of the buttons and bullets were found purposely placed inside small circles of stones...what does that indicate???

Any Ideas?

Jim

I am not sure but it sounds like they left hastily . Maybe they were making battle plans with the rocks and bullets and buttons . Or could be a cashe of wepons or payroll map of some sort make sure you write down all details as you can remember them about this find . All maybe not what it seems this might lead you to other treasure . Just saying Rob :coffee2:

those are conical bullets so 1860's up. my guess is an indian camp that was reloading with captured arms/ammunition. the buttons may have been removed from an old uniform piece that was used as an oven mitt, to keep from burning your hands while pouring hot lead from a ladel into a bullet mould.

just a guess.

We see lot's of very unusual designs made with rocks and small stones in the AZ desert. My guess is it has to do with Native American Ritual. If you look around, there isn't much there but rocks and stones to use for these purposes. I have found several at the tops of tall mountain peaks as well. Nice finds, Welcome to the forum!! :icon_thumleft:
