Hello everyone,
I got another good one for the experts.
I purchased it, at a garage sale in PEI.
What would you call this?axe? Hammer? Chisel? Hatchet???
How old is it?
Ever seen one like it?
The top part seems it was a file?
How old could the file be?
The handle is also an iron rod, railroad spike or??
It is very solid,
feels like a weapon not a tool.
Has seen alot of use,
look at how folded over the hammer side is.
Did the folding metal happen from usage? Or was it made like that?
If it is a tool, what for?, i wouldnt use it for hammering a nail.... And if i had to knock someones skull, this would be better than the hammer.., thats why i think weapon
Thanks.

Looks like you have a home made blacksmith tool. The blade part appears to have been made out of an old horse shoeing rasp, or hoof rasp, which is a large file used to level the horses foot in preparation to nail on a shoe. The handle has been forge welded onto the rasp, and the heating process has taken the temper out of the file, so that it is soft enough to bend where it has been pounded on. My guess is that it's was made to use as a hot chisel for cutting iron when doing forge work.

This is a store purchased hot chisel.

Here is a hot chisel in use, only the smith is using his tongs instead of a having a handle on it.

Very cool thanks for the info, what you explained sounds very likely, im guna take a look at shoeing rasps, your theory certainly explains all the wear it has.
