Looks like a roofer's hatchett. Used to split shingles and drive nails.
shinglers hatchet and could very well date to the mid 1850's....more than likely does actually
Harry Ridgeway aka The Relicman has an identical one on display at the Old Courthouse Civil War museum in Winchester VA. He has a world renowned collection and doesn't display random stuff. I also have a similar one found in a Union campsite. The ax was as important to the armies as the rifle. I've found dozens like most relic hunters. And like archaeologists you date relics by what you find them with. Not 100% accurate but what is. Heres mine. Its one of my fav display pieces. I say congrats!
This is very similar to yours also it was next to a 1850s building. I'm guessing this was used to split the cedar shakes in construction of the building in coupville way. <img src="http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=906808"/>
Its also the Lizzie Borden murder weapon. The murders occurred in 1892. From the Borden collection..
My grandfather had one that he told me had belonged to his grandfather who was a carpenter. He never told me anything else about it but it had to be old because my grandfather was born in the 1890's and the tool had been his grandfather's. I wish I knew what happened to it. Very cool!
Cool axe.
Just on a side note! If you are hunting a civil war camp and ever noticed those horse shoes and axes, etc are found right next to a tree, lot of diggers especially in like the 80s and 90s use to throw horse shoes, axes, etc right next to a tree... I can't even count how many horse shoes and such I find next to a tree but, of course I rarely keep those iron artifacts like horse shoes but.... lately I have been taking the axes and hatchets... So if you like finding iron artifacts.like these always make sure you hunt around the trees!! You be amazed how many hunters don't get right near the trees especially in the woods.. Just thought I would throw this in there!! Sorry about going off topic.
