Awl's not lost...
I spent some time in Cheyenne WY earlier this month and my streak at finding awls stayed on track while there. We spent an afternoon checking out the local antique shops. Something in a small glass case caught my eye, it looked so familiar, I knew it before I read the tag "Bone awl" and the name of the site where I hunt. I know people have been hunting this site for over 100 years and I'm sure artifacts from there have ended up in many places. I guess it used to be common to shellac or stain items like this. The other piece was in a different shop and listed as a petrified letter opener. I don't know where it came from but it's a very nicely worked and well used tool.
