My AVG Icon in the tray has a !
on top of it.

when I open the User interface

Email Scanner is not active.

For over a month now this has been happening almost daily.

I used to be able to correct it
by restarting or Updating

For the last 24 Hours nothing has worked.

The first time it happened I Uninstalled & Reinstalled & It
didn't help, but it eventually fixed itself.
But am thinking of doing it again.

Any ideas what's going on ?

Get Avast. http://www.avast.com.

It's free. It works. It will allow you to scan your computer BEFORE the explorer shell loads, which is what many viruses and spyware use to make themselves so difficult to remove.

We use it in my shop to cleanup after AVG and Norton. Does an excellent job! Use it on my daughter's computer, use it on my "downloading" computer at work. No problems. Been using it since 2002. It isn't as good as Panda Internet Security, but pretty darned close.

There is also a professional version.

Un-installed & Re-Installed
was perfect till I restarted my Computer.

Scan starts at Noon

I May just Uninstall again & try Mcaffee through Comcast & see how long
that lasts.

I installed McAfee on a PC the other day from AT&T and the computer came to a screeching halt! After I unistalled it everything was back to normal.

I use Avast as well and find it does a very good job. The only complaint I have with it is you have to manually run a virus scan weekly since the free version doesn't have a scheduler.

I think it's a great program.

I'm running the AVG Free now with auto updates but only a manual run time.
It resolved an infection when I dl'ded it while actively under the influence of a bug.

My subscription to Spyware Doctor and another anti virus program had just expired.
They apparently weren't updated quick enough to keep current with the bad guys.

I read emails online, with no auto notification.

Sry no help with the !

Sounds like one of your files is corrupted..
Maybe scan the drive and re-compress... reload a new copy of AVG?

Good luck

I run AVG and get that exclamation point on the tray icon from time to time. It means it couldn't connect to the server to do the auto update. I double click on the icon and when the window opens I click on "Update Now" on the left hand side, it goes thru the update and then it's done.
Good Luck,
Glenn

I should have seen this earlier but I wasn't careful when I read your post.

You can activate the e-mail scanner settings to make it active, that's probably why you have the !

On the user interface screen, click on Overview. You will see all the security components and their status ie. Anti-virus, Update Manager, Link Scanner. double click on the one that says email scanner and a screen will open up allowing you to change the email scanner settings. You have 3 boxes to check off, I have the 1st and 3rd boxes checked. The first one says check incoming emails and the 3rd says display notification while email is being scanned. Don't forget to click on save settings on the bottom.
Good Luck to you,
Glenn

I just uninstalled & re installed again about an hour ago

The first time this Morning I Downloaded off of C/Net

This Evening off of AVG

When I uninstalled I also went into My Computer
after & Deleted a bunch of Files that didn't Delete
when I Removed AVG

I Deleted everything that started with AVG in case one was corrupted.

As of right now everything is good but I didn't restart my Computer after this time.

I will Know in the morning when I start it IF it holds.

Before I Started this thread I Tried what you suggested

I had Scan Incoming Checked
I Had Scan Outgoing Checked

I had display notification while email is being scanned Unchecked
Because the pop up is irritating

If DEFAULT Checks all they are all Activated right now
Because I didn't check since the last download

I HATE computers!

They are supposed to be a wonderful asset, awesome timesaver, an end to all problems...

AND LOOK WHAT HAPPENS!

I HATE 'em!

I HATE to use four letter words, but not much else is suitable for computers! ;D

Maybe we oughta put 'em all back in the box and go to the tavern and grab a beer!
Tell tall tales and arm wrestle with friends and neighbors.
We might be better off in the end. ;D

Good luck Jeff.

Same exact thing happened with my AVG last week. I haven't corrected it yet, but I think I may know whats going on. Its a six month deal with them. Its been about six months since I downloaded it.

What I'm gonna try is dump the program and all files anywhere with it, then do a regedit and delete it from the registry. Then upload again. We'll see-

Yep thats what I did.
Delete it all

It's Not supposed to have a limit as far as I Knew

I was advised that it had a limit of 3 or 6 months :icon_scratch: can't recall,,,, and when it went all strange, I was advised to remove and reload. It worked fine after that.

It's the proverbial Love/Hate thing, t'be sure.
In the late 60's, I remember the idea was, we needed to learn more about how to spend all the spare time we would have, because of all the work computers will do for us.
Yeah Right ::)
but I wouldn't be without this ability, to connect through the internet.

When Computers were first being Introduced to the Homes,
I said "never me" I thought they were all for
sitting around computing Numbers
& Playing Games. like computer solitare with yourself
"Not My Bag"

I thought to myself it would be cool
if you could research Anything & Everything on one,
that they would be connected to the World.

Then when it happend & I heard about EMail

I thought I never learned to type anyway &
The last thing I want to do is sit around
Typing messages to people.
If I wanna talk to somone I
would rather call or talk in person. :P

Then I leaned about Forums
& Thought Watta Joke
not me :P

Now I can't live without the Evil 3 ;D

on a lighter note

My AVG Is still working after starting up this morning.

I'm hopeing Purging the System of the stray AVG files
was the fix
