Found this plate in a hayfield near an old homesite last month! I've been searching the 'net ever since, and have not found another like it--I did find a similar one in Gary William's Hanover Brass catalog, but not an original. The plate was found here in Central Virginia (private land with owner's permission) .The plate was badly bent when recovered--please see before and after (restoration) pics. From what I have read, I believe it to be an 1850's militia waist belt plate. The AVC stumps me, though--Alabama Volunteer Corps? Albany Volunteer Cadets? Any information as to unit(s) using this plate, rarity and/or value would be SINCERELY APPRECIATED! Jack.

You have an Alabama Volunteer Corps plate--and I'm pretty sure it would've seen CW use, even if it might date earlier.  It may even be CW manufacture.  But either way I'm pretty darned sure that's what it is.

Did you have it Professionally Restored? This plate is a Valuable Find!

Thanks, Buckles,
It was professionally restored. The restorer did an excellent job considering the severity of damage--the problem is that my pics of the "after restoration" were done hurriedly and are not of good quality--I'll try and post some better ones once I get the hang of all this posting business. Thanks for your kind reply. Jack.
