Went through my first two boxes of halves last night with my girlfriend. She seemed to enjoy it, but it's probably because we ended up being pretty successful! Her box had 10 40%ers and mine had 6.

We also kept a few NIFC's, though I can see how doing so will tie up a lot of CRH capital.

2 boxes halves -
90% - 0
40% - 16

Looks like you and you're gf are off to a good start. Hopefully your gf will bring you good luck and you can keep the silver streak going for a while.

H$H!

Got to search through my parents' small cache of halves and managed to pull 3 40%ers out of about $50 loose halves. I also scored three Ikes, no silver, but one is a bicentennial.

I also got handed a 1937-S wheat in change the other day which was a cool find.

Hit up a bank on a cold call asking for any loose or rolled halves. Teller says "Well you're just in time. We were just about to ship out what we have. I have some halves, but they're mixed in with some Eisenhowers." I was barely able to keep from yelling "I'll buy them all!". It looked like they'd been collecting what they had for a long while. She brings out three bags: two with loose Ikes totaling $503 and another bag with CW halves and CW Ikes that look like they came right out of grandpa's collection.

The rolls were in OLD wrappers, and were a blend of uncirculated Ikes, uncirculated Kennedys, Susan B. Anthonys, mixed-date Ikes and halves. The uncirculated Ike and half rolls were all clad 1971+ dates, for which I really have no use. I don't have the time, means, or willpower to piece out all of that out to re-sell. The Susan B. Anthonys all looked like uncirculated 1979, again for which I have no use. Going through the loose Ikes, I found no silvers or proofs, though I did find a ton of 1972 Type-3 which aren't really worth much more over face either. The most promising looking were eleven mixed-date half rolls.

Nothing. Skunked! Over $1400 loose and CWR halves & dollars and not a single silver. I couldn't believe it! So I took a big old dump over to a freshly-opened account. Of course coin machines won't take Eisenhower dollars, so the teller and I spent 20 minutes re-counting the 503 loosies. Sad day, though I was hopefully able to secure a second pickup location for half boxes, due in two days!

like I tell everyone else, the silver comes in waves. But, wow, $1400 worth of potential and nothing to show for it is kinda harsh. Keep plugging!

In most areas you could have sold the $503 in clad Ikes for $1.10 each. May want to go back and get them from the bank where you dumped them so you can add ~ $50 to your CRH-ing funds.

Eh, I don't know. To me, trying to piece out 500 coins seems like a huge pain. I hate Craigslist people and by the time I got done with eBay I'd be in the red. Plus I'd have $500 tied up until they were sold, which I could buy boxes with in the mean time instead.

Picked up a CWR and 10 loosies during my box pickup run. No silver. My primary pickup bank forgot to order my boxes this week because a new vault manager took over. They jokingly asked if I'd like to double my order for next week to make up for it. "Hahaha that's funny! But yeah, go ahead and double my order. Forever." And they did. I have a couple other boxes to go through, hopefully tonight. They felt pretty heavy...

Too bad you were skunked on the bags but your LCS might be willing to offer you a little something over fv for Ike's - esp if they're in nice condition. And if so that's as easy (or maybe even easier) as dumping them at your bank plus you make a little money. Also did you check the '79 SBA's for any near dates? Those are worth a little money too. Good luck with your boxes tonight. I picked up 3 half boxes today that I have to go through tonight myself.

H$H!

Hi SilverFace, I did call up a couple coin shops before taking them back to the bank. Nobody was interested in the uncirculated Ike rolls, which really surprised me. I would've even left them there for face just to get rid of them. I haven't done much looking at the SBAs, but I guess it wouldn't've hurt. I was also in a rush to check 'em before work. I suppose in the future if I come across any of these I'll take a better stab at making a profit on them.

Good luck on your boxes too!

That is a little surprising that coin shops in your area weren't interested in the Ike's - esp since you had some Unc rolls. I dumped a bag of 100 circulated Ike's at my LCS earlier this year for a small 5% profit and the owner of the shop didn't even bother to count them and barely even looked at them. But he's kinda familiar with me and I know things like that will vary from shop to shop. I'd imagine he would probably offer me 10% over fv or more for Unc rolls. And I know ebay is a pain and their fees are too high but I bet you could probably make a 50% + profit on Unc Ike rolls.

And if you're not familiar with the '79(P) SBA near date/wide rim varieties, here's a link with good info about them that Numismaniac sent me a couple of years ago:

1979 Wide Rim Susan B. Anthony Dollar | eBay

The enders in the Ike rolls looked like they weren't stored very well, so I'm not even sure what the condition of the rest of the roll would have been. It sounds like I should've pursued the sales route a little bit harder, and I most likely will next time I come across some. And thanks for the link. The varieties in the '79 SBAs look pretty easy to spot. Looks like I was probably a little hasty in my dumping and should've consulted the treasurenet experts, eh?

I'm often surprised when I see how much circulated clad Ike's sell for on ebay. But selling on ebay is rather expensive and if you couldn't make a decent profit selling them all in one big lot it might not be worth the hassle. And you did check with your LCS's and they weren't interested and like you said that money could probably be better used crhing for silver than being tied up in clad coins for an indefinite period of time. I've still got several unc bank rolls of SBA's myself that I got at a bank a couple of years ago and another 100 or more clad Ike's that I suppose I should get rid of too. I mostly hoard silver but sometimes I'm guilty of tying up a little too much money in clad coins as well.

Good luck with the SBA's and H$H!

2 boxes - one 40%er. Not a great average over the past 4 boxes. I think I'll start keeping track of my silver/skunk/current box streaks.

Also found a 5/13 BuffaloBoy mark, my second of those. I've also found 3 InfoWarrior marks in past boxes ;)

Well u still have a decent average for the 6 boxes. Often times half boxes can be hit and miss. I've had a pretty decent year overall this year considering my volume but I had at least a 14 box or more skunk streak in March-April which isn't too bad considering what some other people go through but my volume at the time was only about 2-3 boxes a week so it lasted about 6-7 weeks which made it seem worse. Then in May things completely reversed and I had my best month ever with half boxes.

All the skunk boxes you get make you appreciate the good boxes even more. Your gf seemed to bring you pretty good luck with the first two boxes - maybe you should keep crhing with her. :)

H$H!

That's a pretty awful skunk streak! We got very lucky on our first boxes, and my gf got spoiled! I kept telling her that it's very rare to find that much silver in a box, and now when she hunts with me she expects every roll to have silver! I don't want her to get discouraged, but that's just the nature of the hobby. Just sitting around waiting for someone to go dump a load of silver. As slow as things can be, I still see people on here finding interesting things all the time, so the silver is still out there.

How did you do on your boxes last night?

It seems pretty rare to have a gf or wife that's got any interest in crhing. But if she's expecting to find silver in nearly every roll then she is likely to get discouraged and lose interest in the hobby. Although I suppose that's understandable for her to have high expectations since you started with a couple of good boxes. Maybe you'll get some more good boxes soon and find some 90%er's which might keep her interested. And as you start accumulating more silver as silver prices go higher that'll probably make the hobby seem more fun for her too.

And I haven't even finished the first of my three boxes from yesterday but so far the first one's looking like a skunk. Hopefully the other two I got from another bank will be better. Maybe I'll update my log this wknd after I finish the other two boxes.

H$H!

Did two boxes with my girlfriend last night. I always let her get first pick of the boxes, and she always seems to pick the better one. I pulled out 4 40% and a 2008 proof, and she pulled out 5 40%ers and our first 90%er. She must be the good luck charm!

In my box about half the rolls were solid edge-marked, so I was pretty surprised to find any silver at all. Four more boxes to go, two of which are from the same order as the above.

It does sound like you have a good luck charm on your hands. HH
